I typically carry two knives, one IWB just to my left of center line and another in my right hand pocket. My IWB is always a tip down and the carry in my right pocket is tip up. That is just the easiest method of carry/draw for me.

Depends on the lock type & opening device.

If a liner lock/frame lock, I prefer tip up, so it does not open in my pocket accidentally.

If an axis lock or a lock back, it depends on whether it has a stud or a hole: stud=tip up, hole=tip down.

I guess when it comes down to it:

I like the tip down, with a thumb hole, so I can just pinch the blade by the hole, draw the knife from my pocket & flick my wrist down, to drop the handle into my palm, all in one motion.

We have a winner across the board here!

Tip up, because I find it easier to get the knife in-hand and deployed with that configuration. I only own one Spyderco, and it is tip up, so I don't know the benefit of the Spydie drop from the pocket. I'll have to check that out in the next passaround Spyderco I get.

Tip Down, I think it is safer that way, no surprises for your fingers if it opens slightly while in your pocket. I'm not a fast draw artist so a slight speed advantage of tip up carry isn't important to me.

Tip up for me and for my wife too.

Tip up seems more natural to me whether it's in my back pocket or in waist band or in a sheath. If it's got a thumb stud, you're going to be tip up. It's normal that way.

I got my wife a Camillus Blaze and she now won't carry it because it's tip down. She can't figure out how to deploy it quickly.

I can see how grabbing the knife in tip down and then letting it swing into your palm for deployment works for some, but it just seems to work better in the tip up mode.

Tip up, keeps my pivot clean. I just hate a gritty pivot, the sounds of it's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me...

axis lock knives are mandate tip up carry.

With the exception of:
Model 805 - TSEK AXIS™
Clip: Black, Reversible, Tip-Up OR Tip-Down (4 possible positions)
Lock Mechanism: AXIS™

Model 806 - AFCK AXIS™
Clip: Black, Reversible, Tip-Up OR Tip-Down (4 possible positions)
Lock Mechanism: AXIS™

I've been considering the 806 myself.

For me, the Spyderhole makes this question a non-factor.
However, the bottom line is how cool the knife is...
If I have to rely on a 3" piece of steel for my personal safety then my Nikes are gonna do all the very fast movements.
I guess my answer is it doesn't really matter.

I finally decided tip up works best for me. I took tip down knives out of the rotation because I got tired of getting screwed up every time I pulled out my knife! :(

I prefer tip up, but I'll still carry tip-down.

Why am I seeing "You may not vote on this poll"? Is the poll closed, or do I stink today?

I'm not certain on this one but I believe only Basic level and above members can vote in polls. Maybe a mod can confirm/deny this.

The tagline at the top of BF's pages says to upgrade if you want to "post polls", but it doesn't say anything about being able to vote in them.

Odd. I seem to remember voting in polls in the past, but that may have been at another forum.

How about a tip down assisted opener with a flicker. The flicker below the level of the clip and shaped like a hook (like a wave opener) so that when you pull out the knife the flicker grabs on the pocket and the knife opens automatically on the draw.
