Tired of Spyderco Lack of QC

I will say that Spyderco needs to go back to the gray box.Looks much better but more to the point every knife I have gotten in the red box had the red ink on the G10 and was a pain to get off.

IIRC they moved to the red boxes because venders wanted something nicer looking for display.

A plastic baggie for every knife would fix that issue entirely.

I've only had 12 Spydies and the only thing I have found less than near perfect was a odd spot on the blade grind on an orange Mille. Nothing bad or performance effecting just "odd" in a certain light. They are cranking out a lot of knives so the odds are surely there for a few less than stellar examples. I'm looking at my G10 Delica right now and can't find even the most minuscule problem. They offer so many styles, locks, materials and steels that it's hard to just have one.

I've got a new Military coming from KnifeWorks. I spoke to them and they promised to pull the knife and check for centering of the blade, good lock-up, and any visible signs of scuffs on the G-10 or the blade steel before shipping it.

It sounds like my search for a really nice example of the Military may be over.  :D

Sorry to hear you received some Spyderco knives that didn't meet your expectations. It's always disappointing to spend your hard earned cash and not get the quality you expected. However, I would like to go on record as saying I've owned literally hundreds of Spyderco knives and with the exception of a sprint run Blue Manix2 with an off-centered blade, which was quickly and easily remedied, and a little bit of some grit in the pivot of a Carbon Fiber Native ( again, which was simply fixed )....I've never received a Spyderco that I didn't consider to be flawless. Sometimes I think we forget these are production knives, and fuss a bit too much over minor details rather than getting out and putting the knife to good use. After all, they are tools, not museum pieces.

- regards

See, now there you go. I've bought 8 Benchmades in the past 2 years and they're all blue class and all perfect - I mean flawless in every way that I've mentioned here and more. The blades aren't ground as thin as a Spyderco but one of those blunt little 940's slices copy paper ( & my knuckle once) just as easily as my hollow gound Centofante.

cziv, I think you should buy my benchmades, and I'll buy your spydercos then we can switch. We seem to be having exactly opposite experiences. :) joe

Of the couple dozen Spydie's I've bought in the last couple years, I've not had a single problem. Course I'm using them everyday, not looking for 'nits'.

Hope you'll have better luck with your next one. I'm anticipating a Orange-Millie from Sierra Trading Post for only $100 this week, that's LUCK!

I've never had to send a Spyderco back.

Me either, except the one Military but the dealer agreed - defective - and refunded. My new one's on it's way

Cosmetic problems several, but I move my knives often and always have a keen eye on the details which can cost you $$ on trades and re-sale. ;)

I'm not married to one brand of knife and in the end, my representative collection would be a large Sebenza, a couple of XM-18s, Endura 4 G-10, Military G-10, large CS Voyager, CS Recon-1 triad, BM 940 & 710 and my Demko AD-10 with 4" blade. Those aren't going anywhere, the rest come and go. :D

Same here. A couple of cosmetic issues, but nothing major. I don't mind if a blade isn't perfectly centered when the knife is closed though. Most are well centered, but a couple are a bit off (1 Military (easily fixed) and 1 Lil Temp).

None have had any flaws that impede function.

Sorry to hear about your issues.

During last five years I bought over hundred Spydercos. Two of them had cosmetic flows and blade on Superhawk was missing chunk of steel on the spine. All issues were resolved. I never saw stripped screws or scuffed scales on new Spydercos, which make me believe like many other people, that your problems could come from the dealer.

I really hope that this will solve your problem.
Good luck

Thanks bh49,

In the future I'm going to ask that all of my $100+ knives be inspected. The vendor was very willing to do it and I've been with them for a lot of years, so why not take a small advantage of that relationship a little. :)

It's not taking advantage, it's called Customer Service. If they can do that small favor for you and earn your business then it's a small price to pay. Right?

Agreed! So how long have you been the "Spinning Cyclone of Death?" I never noticed it before right now....  :D

I have the problem with off-centered blades on almost all of my Spyderco knives, too. If you ask me, Spyderco doesn't know how to center blades. I've had more than 20 Spydercos over the past few years, and I think 80% of them have had off-centered blades.

Of the 7 Spydercos I have right now, only 2 of them have centered blades.

So I kind of feel like I'm in the same boat as you: everyone around me claims that they have 6000 Spyderco knives, and not one of them has a problem, yet I have some kind of cosmetic issue with nearly every one I get.

In all, it's not a big deal to me. I'd just like to see Spyderco improve the quality of their knives.

Agreed. Those who said theirs were all perfect either owned not enough quantity to justify the claim at all, or just have a very low expectation on the quality of the products but good for them.

When I am buying form NGK I always asking them to open a box and inspect the knife. They always do.
Let us know about last order. It is time to change luck for better.:)

Centering of the blade is pretty far down on my list of things to look for in a knife;) I'm much more concerned about blade grinding, lock-up etc. If they are slightly off center it doesn't concern me at all, if they are way off center I'll adjust them (only needed to do so twice). And I own and have given away many Spydercos:p ;)
