Just got the new Kershaw Ti/SG2 JYD II (1725SG2). I know there are a lot of fans out there of the JYD I and the JYD II (in particular), thought you might like to see some pics of it (alongside a JYD I) while it is still pristine. Haven't done anything with it except for flip it open, and it does that incredibly well (only took four or five flips to either get the hang of it or break it in, not sure which since it flips a bit differently than the Lahar I am used to.) Its pretty easy to really get it to snap open. If you like the JYD II but really want a frame lock version, then hurry up and get your hands on one of these!

In any case, here are the pics, there are more posted over in the Kershaw forum, here.

Great pics, Kneedeep, thanks for sharing!
Thanks and you're welcome!

Is the beast sharp?:p

Hadn't really tried cutting anything with it since I wanted to keep it clean for the photos, but I tried shaving a bit of hair off the back of my hand, and I thought it didn't do anything because there was no resistance, but there is no longer a trace of hair in that spot. Kind of a pain too since the little hairs were sticking all over the oil on the blade, had to wipe it down pretty thoroughly before shooting. I'd say it is extremely sharp, if not ridiculously sharp.

Ive been searching the net and cant find where to get one? Why i dont know. Where should i look.
Thnks:D:confused: Matt

They just shipped last week, so they probably are just getting to the dealers.
You should try calling or emailing your favorite dealers, as they likely haven't added it to their sites yet.

What's with the hamon on the larger one? It looks really interesting. Are the larger JYD differentially heat treated?

The larger JYD is the limited run (1000 pieces), with an SG2 blade.
The blade has a core of SG2 (a high end powdered steel) with 410 stainless cladding. The hamon is actually the line where the SG2 is exposed in grinding.

The handle is a Titanium frame lock. The regular version of the JYD II has a 13C26 blade and G10 handles with a liner lock.

Really. Cool. I thought Kershaw only used the SG2 in the SE Blur with bronze aluminum handles.

I might try to get one of these.

Thanks,

it's basically a laminated blade. SG2 core clad with 410(?) steel, so as you grind the blade thinner towards the edge, you expose the 2 different steels. it's just like the ZDP/420 blades Spyderco uses.

Update from over in the Kershaw forum.

Just a few got out the door, and now it looks as if it gonna be a couple weeks on the balance (regular business jumped in the way, imagine that this time of year).

Looks like the final yield will be right at 700 pieces on this run.

So get your orders in early, doesn't look like there will too many to go around.

kneedeep,
Great pics! Thank you! I do have a question though, not necessarily for you, but for anybody who knows. Why is the lamination uneven, and do you think this will affect performance? The lamination line on the left side (non-clip side) of your blade, while a bit high, looks good, as the line follows the pattern of the blade. The right side (clip side) lamination, however, doesn't look so good to me. It does not follow the pattern of the blade and appears too low towards the tip of the knife.

Sexy...

Since I'm here: A quick description of sg2 please? And is it the same steel as in the smaller version?

3G, I noticed the unevenness when I first received the knife. Visually, the actual grinds seem even, so it is possible that there is simply some variation in the lamination of the steel. Also, the thicknesses we are dealing with at the edge of the laminate are tiny, the slightest variation in depth of the grind will move the line a considerable distance. So I'd guess it might be a combination of the two.

I doubt that there will be any noticeable effect on performance since the SG2 core runs through the entire blade. If I ever actually sharpen it that much, I'm pretty sure it will keep exposing the SG2.

Jamesh, the smaller JYD has a Sandvik 13C26 blade. This JYD II's blade is SG2 a laminated steel with an SG2 core (Super Gold 2, a powdered steel with high hardness and high edge retention), sandwiched between two layers of 410 stainless.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge on either subject will chime in with more info.

By the way, here are a couple of pics for Vassili.

Whittled a couple of hairs for you with my Ti/SG2 JYD II (factory edge).

This one I shaved twice over the same area, though I didn't go as far with the second stroke.

Thank you for explaining. That was what I was wondering about, how sharpening would affect the blade and the lamination.

Wow that's sharp! Hell, none of my knives are THAT sharp. They can shave hair but not whittle...
