To all BM 630 Skirmish critics

"snip" And Benchmade has had a deal in the past with Spyderco to use the Spydie hole (old school AFCK). Do they still have a arrangement? Don't know. I'm sure things have been worked out ,or the knife wouldn't be made...

But please don't start a mud slinging match about this, it has aready been done to death before.

Saberman - some searching would have turned up this recent quote "Spyderco is pursuing legal recourse" I guess this would indicate that, contrary to your conclusions above, things have not been worked out.

:) Just won a prototype with three holes on the Ebay, will be shipped tommorow. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6518963294
Regarding the arguments about strength of the material. I agree more with the guy who says that removing the material without deforming the shape will not make the object any stronger. However, other guy has his point too, it will make it lighter, so would not have to carry some of it's own weight. Therefore when talking about big objects such as skyscrebers removing extra weight would be a wise move. And hey, I don't have any degrees yet, just a :) brilliant mind.

sal let BM use a round hole on the mod 800 AFCK, the old boxes i have have a sticker that says 'licensed by spyderco' on them, so he did let at least one production use the round hole.
That is correct. Both the BM Ascent and AFCK models came with round holes a few years ago. I should have specified "no longer applies to production knives", my mistake, thanks for the correction.

I wonder why they moved away from the 3-hole proto and added a fourth hole?

Check out when Ken Onion first started using the same 3-hole design on his knives - this may give you the answer. It would also be interesting to check on who has trademarked the descending size three hole pattern on the blade (Kershaw maybe?)

It is true that Spyderco let third parties to use the roundhole (which I also think is a great thing), but this does not applies to production knives / manufacturers, only to custom knifemakers and usually they are limited to 50 pcs. a year. So I think there is something wrong with the 630 after all.
However, I wonder what would it happen if someone would trademark a cylindrical thumbstud as an opening device? Is there any difference between patenting a round hole and a thumbstud?

dialex, not disagreaing with yea.

4 s ter, Thanks for the update. I missed the that tread.
