I'm messing around making a longer fatter axe handle to fit a smaller hatchet head.....I've cut it shorter and shaped it to size but now I have to make a cut for the wood wedge...How deep should I make the cut? So that it's half the height of the head or deeper? Thanks

I understand the feeling. People who don't hand make anything don't understand how many moments there are throughout a project to ruin the entire thing, and lose a lot of work. We're going to need pics! Good luck!

It's not always necessary to do , but sometimes it's needed.

I always double step my hammers ( 2 Steel step wedges ) , because that's how Vaughan does it, and if they do it then it's good enough for me.
