To Open Or Not To Open, That Is The Question

Send it to me if the other guy backs out. ...I give you my word that I've done it before and I'll do it again just for you. I'll even send you back the packaging to keep as proof.

You now have seconds (thirds?) on the opening if I can't bring myself to do it and mymindisamob backs out. What a generous offer to send back the clamshell. Thanks! :D

I usually find value in the use of a thing, not in its possession. I kinda like it when a new car eventually gets a scratch or I wear out a pair of shoes. It means I enjoyed their use. Protecting a $30 knife is a bit like putting a nice fork aside in the wrapping.

To be candid, though, I am talking out of both sides of my mouth. I don't pry or cut metal with a $400 Sebenza, when I would do so with the Skyline, although I have roughed up a $400 Strider.

I think it's funny that the package says "Textured black G10" for the handle when it is pretty clearly orange ;) lol
Oops Kershaw!

I would open it up and use it.

I recently got into Kershaw and have four of their knives so far:

Tremor.

Skyline.

Blue & black Leek.

Knockout (took me a month to find it.)

I wish that Cabela's was selling those orange Skylines online.

I can understand why you would not want to open it. I am funny about my knives too. It is not going to be a valuable collector. You might double your money in 10-15years. Big deal. Orange and other bright handled knives are getting very popular. I have three myself. It will probably be very common in five years which will further hurt collectability.
It would be in my top 3 carry rotation for smallish EDC. I would use it gently, so it will last as long as possible.:D

I hope I can say this, I don't want to get into trouble, but I just got my orange Skyline blem from kershaw Guy today. It's cool.

I was going to say the same thing. Just buy a blem to be your user and keep the new one in the package.
I'd recommend picking up one of the orange fixed-blade Skyline blems while you're at it.

Totally agree with Akula and Ranger, I use my s30v Blur blem a lot. If it was not a blem it would definately be a "safe queen".

Open it. A major part of the fun is cutting through the plastic packaging.

I know it's a cheap thrill, but somebody's got to do it.

Thanks to everyone that responded and for the insight! I may wait until Christmas to do it, but I believe the decision has been made to open and use lightly (no prying of course). As hard as they are to find, the value isn't going to skyrocket because it's still in the package and my willpower isn't that great when it comes to [not] handling knives anyway. :D Once the deed is done, I will post pics of the aftermath. Let's see if I can wait that long...

If you open it and regret the decision just tape it back into the clamshell and forget you opened it. Thats what I do

Use it its not going to appreciate in value and its $30 knife. Knives are meant to be used, they are not looked at through plastic. Hell i use the shit out of $500 + knives and don't think twice about it. If it were a custom I would still use them, just not as hard and with more care. I'm sure the knife is disappointed and wants to cut something:D

Use the knife. Kershaws don't generally go up enough in value to justify not using it.... even if it does, things tend to find a natural level after a price spike and it is almost always below MSRP. Remember Arachnid Fondlers are the only ones who sit on perfectly good, unused production knives ;)

The deed is done. Thanks again for all the support and yes, I do enjoy the knife more now that it is out of the package!

I know you said 'mint is mint' but I don't think anything that comes in a blister pack is going to make you any kinda of money down the road. Maybe - way down the road. Glad you decided to open & use it.

Cut open that packaging with a knife! Then use that knife to cut open other knife packaging! Its a never ending cycle! AHHHHHHH!

Open it. In the end, you will still be able to sell it as a collectors item but you just won't make AS much money if you sell it. If you open it, you can get money and pleasure from it. If you don't open it, you only get money.

Edit to add, good work on opening it :)
