How long would a full bottle last for?
This morning I decided to do another timed burn. I regulated the flame to 5/8'' and it burned for 71 minutes 10 seconds, before going out. At about 65 minutes, the flame started to get smaller until it finally went out completely. Not to bad for only an 1/8th oz. of fuel.
I could pick up the bottle at anytime and the main body of the bottle was always room temp. It never even began to get warm. The neck of the bottle was hot, but I could still hold it for a couple seconds. After the flame went out, it was cold in a minute or two. I am pretty sure I could have even put the cap on the bottle right away if I had to.
The heat it gave off with this size flame was quite a bit. While I didn't dump a gallon of water over my head, which was a GREAT real world test by the way, I think it's more than enough to keep you warm or warm you up under a space blanket or poncho and liner.
Actually, I think the flame was too high if used like this and a smaller flame would have given off more than enough heat, plus increase burn time. I think a 3/8'' flame would work fine and give you around 90 minutes or so of burn time.
The other thing I use these little bottles for is BUG JUICE. You can put enough in them to get a good night sleep if you had to spend an unexpected night out in the bush. I think maybe even two nights.
I have also put bleach in them to purify water. An 1/8th oz. is 71 drops, so you could purify a lot of water, around 5 gallons. It is just hard to get one drop out at a time. So here is what I have come up with that works well.
In your kit, take a piece of wire about an inch or two long. At one end, bend it into a circle. It doesn't matter how big, just so long as it can not fit into the neck of the bottle. Then stick the straight end of the wire into the Tabasco bottle. Now hold the bottle with your left hand and the wire with your right hand, at least this is how I do it, and turn it upside down over the water to be purified. With the right hand holding the wire loop tight against the neck of the bottle, tap the bottom of the bottle with your left finger and each tap will produce one drop. With a little practice, this is VERY easy to do, and pretty accurate. Now you have a way of purifiying a large amount of water in a very small container.
One thing I also do to the bottle is I wrap it in black heat shrink tubing to keep out the light. Light breaks down bleach after time, at least that is what I have read and been told.
These little bottles are pretty handy. My brother even carrys some kind of liquid he uses for fishing. He taps a couple drops on his bait and claims it really works great. He batons wood to, so whatever.
Sorry for getting off topic here. I got carried away with what these little bottles can be used for.
