today i bought a ZT0888 in a shop

For the love of me I can't understand how ZT doesn't mass produce the 0888. Literally every knife enthousiast would buy at least two of them.

To be honest, there might a reason of prestige and myth : both the 777 and the 888 demonstrate that Kai challenges the designs and the material used , sometimes with less luck than others (777) and the exclusivity makes them more desirable adn makes ZT a known brand

I think it is pretty clever, their "regular" knives are pretty awesome too

The same thing could probably said about the Volt 3600 and the Tilt.

I know I'd be in for a couple of each.

here are my thoughts recorded in a video now on YT

I partially agree, if you want exclusivity why not keep it's current specs exclusive and release an S30V version with washers for the masses. If you want to widen the gap further, you could even downgrade to Sandvik 14c28n steel with T6 handles and put it on the market at an msrp of slighly over $100. People would go nuts over it..

The 0888 is such an utterly gorgeous design it actually ruins the 0801 for me. It's like presenting a fine wine and then pouring apple juice for the masses.

Ralphy,

You need to get the ZT 0777-M390 and ZT 0777-M390BLK as comparisons.

I have all four, that is, 0888, 0777, 0777-M390 and ZT 0777-M390BLK.

They're all great in their own way.

The milling on the 0888 handles are superb. That's a lot of manufacturing time per handle. Superb composite rendering on the blade. Beefie folder but a smooth flipper.

0777 is the snappiest flipper in the bunch (don't know why) and the Damascus composite is a mastery. This is a super expensive endeavour.

0777-M390 and ZT 0777-M390BLK are superb values even at inflated secondary market prices simply due to excellent M390 rendering of the blade plus, and most importantly, the superb CF 3D contouring and builtin titanium frame lock. The flipper action is not as robust as on the original 0777 but not shabby at all.

Amazing what KAI has been able to show off in their design, technology, quality and manufacturing. Truly a loss leader.

We don't know for fact, KAI lost anything on these knives. (besides the first 0777 which they stated they did because of the blade) To say they did on the other 0777 models and the 0888 is just guessing. I would think they had sense enough to charge an amount that covered a fair profit.

Thanks for the feedback RamZar. Honestly i don't know if i would get the other 2 777, but i am curious to handle those. I need to see if they are available here.

What i'd really like to check out is the MT matrix, not for the copyright issue, but to see how they went about the design, smoothness of the handle, feel, weight, just comparing these things. I know a shop which has got it, but i'd rather not buy it as i am happy with the 777.

And lastly, as i said in this video, i would really welcome a 666 or a 999, i know it sounds childish, but i would be curious to see how and where they would go from the 888.

Does anyone in the know happen to have any "insight" on such possible things?

The 0454 was Blade Show's 2013 Overall Knife of the Year and is going to be amazing with the three part composite blade (CPM D2 on the cutting edge and spine while 14C28N stainless steel forms the angular design in the middle), similar 3D-machined carbon fiber handles with titanium lockbar (hardened stainless steel lockbar insert) and KVT flipper action.

looks interesting, i don't feel the same excitment looking at it as i do when i look at the 777 (maybe due to the fact that the 777 already exists) but i am really curious about this blade considering the (let's say assumed) problems that ZT encountered when they were trying to make the 777 commercially available.

I guess it is time for me to contact my dealer and see if they have won the lottery!!!

Another one of things I like about the 0454 is its narrow profile and width which makes it easier to carry in the pocket. The width is less than the 0770!

i have had a look at soem shots and i do like the handle, looks interesting. The pocket clips reminds me of Vandermuelen's. i have asked my local shop, we shall see. looks like along knife too, with tanto blade would have been awesome (to me anyway)

The ZT 0454 has a blade length of 4.1 inches but weighs only 4.1 ounces!

wooozaa that's a big one!! that's what she said!!! is this an kind of "integral" carbon made handle?

Long but slender and light. The CF handle and TI subframe lock is similar to the 0777 but with no contouring.
