Awesome pics brandon. The spider one turned out great. I couldnt get the bastid to stand still long enough to snap a pic......

Im sold on that zebra light. Its waay cool. I need to get one. The headlamp mont for it is cool too.

All those lights are sweet!

I don't mean to side-track you....but where do you guys get the bright red and bright orange cord? Is it real 550?

Doc made this really cool sparker out of a lantern lighter. Man this is a cool piece of kit. Very small, and I had no trouble lighting the dryer lint tinder every time with it. Snow really liked this piece too.

Hey jw, I'm glad you liked it. As I said in the email, you still need to make a couple of small firestraws - I didn't because of a possible problem going through customs, also, the can should be covered with a couple of layers of duct tape, for whatever purpose and also to water proof the can.

Also, I think it would be best to sew the pouch closed after you're finished playing, that way the stuff is there when you need it.

I don't know whose hands are using the lantern lighter, but change hands - hold the flint tube in the right hand and the sparking wheel in the left. That way the sparks are thrown downward. I noticed the hands in the picture and then saw that the spark was above the lighter.

That's also a pretty big leaf for that little magnet . It is, of course, not meant to take the place of a compass, only to fill the gap in a survival situation. It can also be laid on a flat piece of wood (without the water) and it will still align itself. (I had a terrible vision of kgd running down the creek after it :()

pitdog: Look like a great day out, that PSK looks really neat, gonna have to look for some earth magnets now !!!

Pitdog, you can find them here.

SpookyPistolero: may be remembering wrong, but I think those rare earth magnets will screw up a compass if you get them too close together. Just something to be cognizant of!

Hey Spooky, if you find any more information about this, please let me know. I don't know why it should screw up a compass, because a compass needle is only just a magnet anyway but I would appreciate any information you come across.

kgd: Doc also claims you can do it one handed (but come to think of it, I'm not fully sure if doc was talking about his lantern lighter in the context of that statement or not )

No comment! :D

BTW, jw, in Ron Hood's video he uses the awl on his SAK to make a hole in a stick to be used as a handle for the leather awl needle. Could come in handy for repairs, such as sewing shut a rip in your coat when you're out in the cold weather, etc.

Hey briang, KnivesShipFree sells multi coloured 550.

Doc, when we used the sparker, I think we had it facing the right way. I cant remember, but I will keep that in mind the next time I use it. The pic with it sparking was just that, a pic of it sparking. We had to try multiple times to catch it sparking.

I was worried about the magnet sinking, so I chose that leaf. It still orientated itself, but I am gonna try out a few differant sizes of leaf in a controlled enviorment(a bucket or something) so I can get an idea of what size to use w/o risking the loss of the magnet. The water we used it in was a puddle left over after a recent creek flooding, as myself and brandon had the same thoughts of it running away...:D I was very pleased with it though, although as you said, not a replacement for a compass, it makes a great PSK compass for orientting in a survival situation. For its size, that makes it invaluable:thumbup:

I plan on adding some firestraws to it, and some lead weight sinkers, and maybe some other small items, that wont increase weight too much.. Overall its a GREAT little kit. The size is great, and that pouch is really cool. We couldnt believe how neat it was. Great job!

I opened this up, pulled it out of the envelope, and stuck it in my pocket on the way out the door. I didnt even open the tin untill we used the magnet. We were blown away:eek: I love the kit, and I thank you for the oppertunity to test it out for ya, and give some feedback. I am gonna play with it alittle more, and then tape the tin, and sew up the pouch. Very light weight, I carried this in my pocket all day, and didnt even notice it was there.

Thanks for the tip on the awl. I would love to use it and see how I fare stitching some stuff with it for practice.

Hey, customs didnt even open the envelope, as well as the tin. Just FYI. I thought that was cool.

Ruben- no worries bro. That wasnt short;) I could ramble on forever when I get talkin bout this stuff. LOL:D Give me a ring again soon, it was nice chatting with you.

Brian- county comm sells it fairly cheap, they have orange, OD, and coyote I believe.

If you notice, the lanyard on my knife changed colors from coyote to orange!
Haha, I accidentally chopped it when I was swingin the scout:o Brandon therew the Orange one on their for me. Looks sweet too.

I love thos little lee valley magnet compasses, I got 2 but liked the fobs so much for my keychain, the magents are god knows where, probably stuck to something metal in my kit someplace! I am looking as we speak, wish me luck.

Ha just found one. It was inside one of those metal dog tag strings, I almost passed it by because I thought it was just all twisted up, but then I saw a screw nail holding on too. Those tiny magnets are strong.

Oh, and thanks for sharing the pics, looks like it was a lot of fun.

Hey jw, something occurred to me as I was reading your post, about losing the magnet. You're going to duct tape the can, so, you could duct tape the magnet compass to a stick.

Also, because it's a magnet, if you drop it somewhere (even in the water) if you can see it, you could tie a knife etc. to a piece of 550, lower the knife and the magnet would stick to the knife or anything else of magnetic character.

I was going to email this to you but since other people have the compass, I thought I would post it here.

Email on its way.

I also had a farmer EDC, and a big ol MOD knife in my bag......

Snows lacewood Nessie was gorgeous. I really liked that one.
