Today's Question: Can This Correctly Be Called a BUCK 110?

Looks like a Spiderco and a fancy custom were doing the dirty, and a 110 came by and ate them both and crapped out that.

That isnt a Buck 110. It has a body like a 110 but the blade isnt Buck, so it aint Buck...

I would imagine it could be called a Buck 110 for the same reason Dale Earnhardt Jr. can call his NASCAR #88 a Chevrolet Impala......neither much resemble what came out of the factory but still take the name from their heritage.

I don't like it! Now if some one were to get it, change the blade back to a real 110.....well it would be a winner.

What should it be called if not a 110? I've seen "110's" from Buck with both 426 and 486 blades. Also those with aftermarket damascus blades. Are those with the 426 and 486 blades more properly called Bucklites? What makes the knife? The handle/frame or the blade??

That was funny MB..I think you pretty much summed it up nicely :D

What we are discussing, gentlemen......is the definition of a Buck Knife.

What makes a Buck a Buck?

Certainly more than the body, I would think.

I think the only description that would fit would be:
Buck 110 framed custom folder.

No it's not a 110.

Thats a little much for me. One of the great things about the 110 and 112's is their simplicity. To much modification, and that is lost.
However, the person that does the modifications is a member here, and appears to do nice work. Not much of the original 110 left, so I don't think I would still call it a 110

Another thing.....

Calling it a Buck means a lifetime warranty.

The warranty would be void on what's left of this 110 body, I'm sure.

Well, that was quick.

The seller made a good decision to remove the auction.

Wish they were all so responsible.

Call it what it is.....Dr. Frankenstine.......a monster is still a monster!

So I guess I'd call it a FrankenBuck;)

I do have a few of them, but, they all have a Buck blade.

Gee, this is kinda like a flash mob......it's not clear to me why everyone was so down on this knife. It was clearly identified as a "custom" There was no misrepresentation. Does Yellowhorse have to start pulling all of his "custom" knives. They are all based on a manufactured knife. I just searched eBay for "Yellowhorse knife" and got 414 hits. Just because a knife isn't to your personal taste doesn't mean the work and effort to make it shouldn't be recognized and respected. (I will make an exception for ballon stickers on a blue handle...;o)

No Buck blade.....No Buck warranty.......No Buck knife.

I completely aggree. If the blade isn't buck, its not a buck. I dont buy handles, I buy a knife for the blade. Custom made knives such as yellowhorse still have Buck blades and for the most part the handles as well. They use the 110 as a base then customize it from there. The person that made this knife left no way to identify this knife as a Buck. Really, if you think of how many other companies have knives that mimic the 110, it is the single most copied knife style ever...

"Flash Mob"

Wow I have never been part of a flash mob before.....what is it?

Desoto,
When I first posted to this thread the auction in the link was still live.....thats a big no no here! I was going to say that the minimum bid was very good for the custom work done on the frame, the price was good (but that may have pushed this thread into the deal spoting issue). However, I don't like most modern art....I just don't get it. Like this custom job, I just don't get the blade the guy put on it. The handle work was nice, not great. The price was right for the work; go to the Buck CS and see what a custom with Paua shell cost $$$$$$$$$

But, worth every penny

Well, the question wasn't wether or not "Buck Inc" will warranty a custom knife not made by them. Of course they won't and no one would even ask them to. The question was, can you call it a Buck knife. Yes you can. It was clearly described as a Custom Buck 110. That description means he started with a Buck 110 and made something else out of it.... ie "Custom" It's the appropriate and accurate description. Lets not start splitting hairs here and start defining % original remaining content necessary to define origin of the design. OK....I'm gonna duck now....
