Todd Begg Knives lawsuit

No matter how butt ugly (as in this case) or stunningly beautiful knives a person makes, a knifemaker should of course have the right to his own name - goes without saying.

In this case, it seems that a knifemaker went into business with friends and/or family (often a precarious matter) to make a profit on production knives (nothing wrong with that - dont like the knives, just dont buy them) and now wants to 'dis-entangelse' himself from that part of the knife making business.

If hope the situation can be solved to the satisfaction of all involved.

I do differentiate this situation, where one volountarily starts working with friends and/or family as opposed to some d-bag comming out of left field and try to capitalize on a knifemakers solidly built reputation and his knives i.e. steal.

Again, hopefully this can get solved amicably.

Well that explains the delays in the newest Steel Craft releases... I own two different models and they are quality, well made blades that impressed the hell out of me.
Truly sucky part is it's going to come down to what was agreed upon in writing as to what designs, and trademarks the LLC has access to, and whether or not Todd agreed to them being perpetual.

If they can't come to a mutual agreement, I hope Todd can regain his trademark.

Obviously we are not privy to the entirety of the situation, nor do we understand the terms and conditions of the company, that all 3 owners willingly started. It's too early to throw people under the bus.

What we do know is that 3 people got together, accumulated capital, and started a knife making company. That company has grown tremendously and done well (imo). At this point, one owner, for which the company is named, wants to pull his assets, and wants the company to stop using his name and his designs. That name was registered/ trademarked by the legal entity that is the company. If that request was honored, Begg Knives would cease to exist aside from hand made customs. The shop would likely close, and everyone would be laid off, including the other 2 owners.

Complicated situation, the outcome will probably not lead to any winners, only large legal fees and a lot of hurt feelings.

I’ll probably never buy a Begg Knife either way, but i hope Todd wins. It still blows my mind that Chris Reeve doesn’t own or run CRK anymore.

This is a rational post that I like reading.

As a side, should I buy a Todd Begg knife or not? If buying, the money (maybe not even a penny) may not go to the designer Todd.o_O

Pride In Making Products? PIMP? So Todd got screwed over by the PIMP? Never trust a pimp.

Sorry, I'll show myself out.

No horse in the race. Obviously a deal gone bad.

Actually your comment is spot-on. If the company is named "PIMP" it's got problems from the get-go. Looks like everyone drank the KoolAid at the beginning of the venture...you reap what you sow.

Knifemakers selling their names and reputations have a long history. Look at Loveless and Lile. They made/make knives after they died.

Maybe Kohai can shed some light on the Chris Reeve bomb he dropped. The family line is he retired and still involved; not that they stole his name/business.

Curious to hear about the status (new products in the pipeline like Glimpse 7.0 and warranty on old ones) of the Todd Begg Steelcraft series made by Reate and WE.

The other ‘line’ is his wife got the business in the divorce.
Who knows, sucks he’s not involved any longer.
Joe

Seeing how I pre-ordered one of the steelcraft glimpses 4-5 months ago, I'd like to know what's going on with this concerning the release of the knife. I don't have $350 that can just sit around in perpetuity.

If I were you, I'd contact the re-seller you pre-ordered with and see if they know anything about production or will be issuing refunds.

Looks like steelcraft glimpses have hit a couple dealers and ebay already.

This thread doesn't appear to be about the Reeves and their personal business. Start your own thread if you want to discuss such matters. Keep it on topic.

Pride in Making Products LLC., the holder of Todd Begg Knives trademarks, has issued a statement in response to the lawsuit filed by Todd Begg last Friday. The statement primarily addresses intellectual property issues raised in the lawsuit. You can read the complete and unedited statement at the bottom of this post.

In their statement, the company reaffirmed their ownership of the Todd Begg Knives brand name and their right to produce Begg designs. “Regarding Todd’s claims of ‘knives being produced without his consent, endorsement or permission,’ as well as implying the knives we produce are not ‘genuine,’ this is a false statement,” the company writes. It notes that Todd’s 1/3 ownership precludes any ability to revoke permission regarding particular designs. “Todd is currently and always has been an LLC member and is not at liberty to withdraw endorsements, designs, nor consent.”

The statement continues, assuring its customers that Todd Begg Knives “will continue to make knives in the same manner that they have been doing for the past six years, and our customers can purchase our knives with confidence while continuing to receive the customer service that they have grown to expect.” The company announced its latest Steelcraft line knife, the Glimpse, in June. “We are very proud of our team and all the innovations and input they have brought to the table here at Begg Knives and look forward to continuing this in the future,” they add.

PRIDE IN MAKING PRODUCTS LLC COMPLETE AND UNEDITED STATEMENT
To our customers and anyone it may concern,

It is unfortunate that private matters must be brought into the public arena, but at this point there are some false allegations that must be addressed to shed some insight on the situation at hand.

Todd Begg Knives is a legally trademarked name owned by PRIDE IN MAKING PRODUCTS LLC., an LLC which was mutually created and is equally owned by Todd M. Begg, Mark Skaggs and Mattia Borrani. Our LLC partnership was created six years ago with the intent to bring Todd Begg Knives to a broader global audience by making the knives more abundant and accessible to the knife community while still keeping the quality and attention to detail everyone has come to expect from a custom knife.

Regarding Todd’s claims of “knives being produced without his consent, endorsement or permission”, as well as implying the knives we produce are not “genuine”, this is a false statement. Todd is currently and always has been an LLC member and is not at liberty to withdraw endorsements, designs, nor consent. Everything we do here at Todd Begg Knives has been a collaborative effort when it comes to the creation of a knife, and to assume that only one person has the right to control and lay claim to the products we produce is presumptuous and unfounded. By doing so, this affects business agreements and practices which in turn impacts the health and integrity of a company, without any regard for its employees and shareholders.

We have always been very transparent and forthright with what we make here at our factory in California as well as what we make overseas, and we will continue to do so. Our group of skilled engineers and craftsmen will continue to make knives in the same manner that they have been doing for the past six years and, our customers can purchase our knives with confidence while continuing to receive the customer service that they have grown to expect. We are very proud of our team and all the innovations and input they have brought to the table here at Begg Knives and look forward to continuing this in the future.

If our customers and dealers have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at customerservice@beggknives.com We are happy to answer any inquiries you may have.

Best,

Todd Begg Knives
