Toilet Paper Alternatives

Should you trim any excess nether-region hair before going to the woods, just to make it easier to keep clean? ;)

On winter camping trips, people look at me like I'm crazy when I say I wipe with snow and advocating they do the same. Sure, pucker factor is 10 but it is clean and usually never a shortage of it in the bush.

Otherwise, I'll bring a roll and a .97 cent Fiskars shovel. I'd rather wipe in comfort and bury it 6" deep than having to deal with grass, twigs or leaves.

I can't believe no one mentioned carrying a corn cob with them. :D

I was shown this method long ago by an old Gunny, but I've never tested it out. :p If you did use it you could get by with not carrying much TP....it should work well for those UL types. How to Wipe Using One Sheet.. Not my first choice of sources, but this was the only description with pics I could find online.

When we were kids we used broad-leafed plants like Common Butterbur-smooth side. Some years ago I had to cut of my T-shirt sleeves. Now i have roll of TP and at least three packs of tissue paper,so I cant`t just run off.If I did, then I have more serious problem than lack of TP.

I'll use sphagnum moss if around, even if I have paper. Before using dump a bit of water on it if it's not already humid.

Learn to idenitify poison ivy and poison oak, just about every other green leaf will do the job.

I've got lots of old flannel work shirts that are now sleeveless from many a forgetful paperless days in the Arctic when there was absolutely nothing else around!

I advocate use of the dedicated "ass rag" as well (both sides), but I use this more for weekly wet "soap and water" cleaning and not as a principal means of wiping!

I've never went without a roll of TP , if you take the cardboard tube out it can squash semi-flat , there's always room for TP unless your only taking a capsule kit with you.

Now that thse little aolcohol hand cleaner bottles are so cheap and abundant I always stash a few of those in my pack as well for the hands.

The worst thing is coming scross someone's scat who didnt bother to dig a hole and bury it..... :barf:

I NEVER go out without at least one of those travel sized containers of TP. I remember once that I was in a state park doing some hiking and well, you get the idea...sure glad I had my $1 worth of TP!

I have used many different things throughout life when its time to go.
Leaves. the best ones are those bigger ones with the fuzz, more fuzz the better, and they can sometimes do a better job than TP

Moss, some moss has natural anti -bacterial compound in them, good for relieving piles and inflamatory bowel disease.

Birch bark, good in a pinch

Spruce branches, be sure to wipe in the direction of the needles, or else ouch!

Warning, here's one not to use. I still remember doing this once as a teenager, Don't use snow. That nice clean looking snowball melted down like a nuclear reactor, with wet crap everywhere. Don't do it:mad:
