Tomahawk as weapon, spike or no spike?

my "hawk" is a tool first and a weapon second...but I choose one with a spike for the tool use of it....

I have goto guns for SD

As a close quarter battle weapon the hawk is NOT suited as it requires too much room to get momentum.

I disagree. Not every blow from a hawk has to be a full swinging-for-the-bleachers whallop. People are soft. Choke up a bit for speed and control and as long as you're not telephone-booth close you're good to go. A blow from a strong-side back approach takes surprisingly little space.

I've thought about the choice, read the whole thread with everyone's opinion & now have a simple observation of my own. My choice is SPIKED. Several "tomahawk fighting" techniques involve various hooks against an opponent (i.e. weapon, limb, etc.). You can hook much more effectively with a rear spike than with a poll. But I still have an impact weapon at the eye with either flat side of the 'hawk.

I have a cousin that took a ball pean hammer to the forehead that was thrown by some guy, dazed him but didnt finish him off. I think had it been a spike he would be dead and gone.

Yeah but it was thrown, which relies on momentum which was lost do to gravity and deceleration of the hammer as it flew through the air. A ball peen hammer in hand would crack a skull easily.

True, but the throw was from about 7 feet from a high school ball player, either way anything that can get thru a qtr inch of plywood (slightly thicker then the human skull) with get thru the skull and into the brain pan.
I think that if you are motivated to do it you will get thru, a spike would just be easier to do it with.

either will work with no problems i reckon. i did watch Keating's tomahawk fighting #2 though and he showed that a spike sticks and hangs up readily stating that is why you don't see it on alot of weapons. could be a problem with multiple bad guys or a zombie apocalypse:p

in terms of a WEAPON, the spike will crush the skull AND penetrate deeply, giving someone a very BAD day and most likely death. However.....a HAMMER will ALSO crush skull, and spread out the hurt over a wider area. BOTH are gonna mess someone up BAD, and possibly kill or do severe brain damage.

Pros of the spike:

can be used as entry tool to breach metal doors and punch out locks, pierce drums to snake cables thru for barricades or empty drums of their contents, can quickly deflate a tire, can pierce a skull/face and do major damage, can pierce personal armour, Can be useful when scrambling up steep hills, for grip (jab in fallen tree, ground etc), can be used to dig out IEDs etc, will pierce security film windows, security glass, auto glass, bulletproof glass (dont ask how i know this), can pierce concrete and brick and adobe,

add some more!

I wouldn't dig out IED or land mines with the spike of a hawk, if its was me .After 5 years in Africa (the cold/hot-war, i know better !

I think it's Dana Turner of Fort Turner hawks shows a soldier digging an IED out with the spike of one of his Roger's Rangers hawks. I think the backstory is, they disarmed and removed the detonator and were using the spike to break up the dirt around the bomb (looks like the nose of a 500-pounder).

Some ma wonder what's under that IED?

I agree with you, bad guise use guns. Therefore i use a gun, my hawk is utility tool with hammer poll and a fun toy, that can be use as a weapon.

For fighting the spike would be better if you only have one opponent. If you have more than one...good luck pulling out the spike before the next one gets you.

I think the poll is more practical for an all rounder, but the spikes are pretty cool.
