Tony’s latest RAT...And no, I’m not talking about “Figure Four” traps in the attic.

Tony let me borrow his new RC-5, a savage field tool, with the hope that I would re-profile the edge into a better slicing tool.

Now this knife cuts well as is, but the new convex edge makes it a savage slicer.

I think Tony will be pleased.

Here are a few before:

I was amazed at the change.

:eek:Freaking Sweet Mike!!!!!!!!!!!!!:):)

That was quick also! That looks nicely convexed, I can't wait to get my paws on it and put it through some wood!

Thanks so much bro, you are a wizard with that grinder:thumbup:

Why don't they come convex edge in the first place? Is it too expensive to do?

Also, is there any downside to putting a convex edge on a knife like this? Is there any loss in edge strength? Will it nick easier?

No way man, a Convex edge is VERY tough.

I think Rowen doesnt do em because they are kind of a specialty edge maybe, some dont like em, I think "regular" guys who buy RATs also might not be as well versed as some of us in edge upkeep, so it just makes sense to keep it simple...Just my opinion though...

All my RC-knives are now convexed. Even my serrated RC-3. I convex the plain edge part and leave the serrations as is, sharpening them with the sharpmaker corners. Some might say that is a PITA, but I find it works well and I kind of enjoy the maintenance aspect!

Sharpening serrations?

Here’s how one of my friends wanted his serrations done.

Mike,
You had me going with the title. I was wondering whether it was going to be a figure-4 trap or a RAT cutlery knife.
Great work.

Tony - we now expect some picts of that mean edge in action:D

Mike, Can you give me a how to on that convexed on the rat, it came out amazing. and did you strop it?

Nice pics but why can't knife companies actually deliver knives that cut. This whole fetish about massive metal stock just in case I need to cut through a tank is starting to put me off production knives. Be they Busse, Rat Cutlery, Fehrman, etc. Common, how about making knives that actually fullfil their primary goal.

The sabre grind on this RC-5 was a lil thick, but still cut well. I however prefer a thinner edge, so I asked Mike to thin it out and convex it.

The RC-3 and RC-4 I have(actually I sold the 4) are both excellent cutters right out of the box! They both have a very good full flat grind.

I have owned 1 Busse(the SAR-5) and I have no clue why that edge was so thick and I didn't like its cutting ability at all. I never owned a Ferman so I can not comment on that. I would however, in my experience with the knives, never use Rat Cutlery and bad cutter in the same sentence!
