Too hot to grind in the shop....110 degrees with fan going

Yep,it's been hard to get motivated and light a fire in the forge,high 90's + high humidity sucks,90's for 15-16 days,no rain:mad:.Supposed to cool midweek:),I hope---Regards Butch

You can all send some heat this way, lucky if we hit 85 today for the first time this year. Hit a whole 78 I think yesterday and other than that, no more than about 65 and lots of rain for weeks on end.

You are probably right....I'd grind a finger off for sure...would not be able to grind and stare at the same time.

Well, here's something weird I noticed, and may interest the "echological" folk.
My forge is on the side of a hill, and was decently ventilated.
Last years my mother in law had the old vineyard removed. The vines were too old, they didn't yeld much, so we planted a new one. But, while we are waiting for the new vines to grow, the side of the hill is as bare as an old bone in the desert. And the breeze always freshened the forge has disappeared. I hope that, when the vineyard will once again cover the side of the hill, and the local micro-climate will be restored, the breeze will come back, but you never know.
On the upside, I have about 10 cubic feet of old vine roots and wood seasoning slowly in the shed... :D

I'm thinking you folks should come to the Pacific Northwest and experience heaven... then again, it might not be so heavenly if it became overcrowded.

Anyway, those of us that have air conditioners tend to run them maybe 10 days out of the year... 15 days on a really bad year. And it doesn't get so cold as to be a problem many more days of the year than that... especially if you have 16 pound thermal masses at 2000 degrees.... not that I'd know about the thermal mass thing, but you know I'm just saying it doesn't get dreadfully cold here either.

You would have to put up with 200+ days of overcast cloudiness and potential drippiness. But if you're okay with that, this is heaven.

Didn't get out to my shop till around 11am. First thing I did was put a hooded sweat shirt on. The skin on my bald head must be getting thinner with age. :D Expected high for today is mid 70's.

Big change in weather here today, as some of that warm air is coming in:thumbup:. After 4 days of stoking fires and nights close to freezing, today we will need the airconditioner for sure. Will have to take a time out for some deck relaxing and a BBQ.

And you should try FORGING in that temp...

:):)When you're in front of the forge it's hot no matter what the weather. My solution is to wear a long sleeve cotton shirt. Once you build a sweat it's much easier to handle the heat.

Last week I had a small hammer-in at my shop and most watched from outside where it was much less hot. :):) I have a 24" exhaust fan but it won't overcome 2300 degrees from the forge.

get in the shop by 5 am, knock off by 2, you still get some heat but its not nearly as bad.

Bunch of babies the lot of ya :) There was still frost on the ground when I went out the the shed this morning at 11am.

Frost is one thing, not being able to sand blades because your dripping sweat is quite another:)

Today is one of those days I'm glad I don't have a thermometer in the shop...weather.com says it's 92 here in town right now and I've been forging for the last two and a half hours. Lunchtime now, a little break, and back into the fires of Mordor...On a good note, the new hydraulic press is working like a champ and I'm getting damascus forged faster than I ever have before. :)

109 outside , felt like a 130 while I was crawling around in the rafters area running all new 12 gauge wiring !

I will be glad when all this shop repair/upgrade work is done and I can get back to making knives.
