Too many in the pocket?

How many is too many in the pocket? I "came up" in the knife community around knife makers and bushcrafters, and have a three is two, two is one and one is none mentality. When it comes to slipjoints, you have the added options of not only one blade, but two, three or more! Right now, I carry mainly single blade slipjoints. I always have a peanut on me, and it gets most of my work taken care of. I also have my Case Tribal spear on me most of the time. Between those two knives, I have all of my cutting needs taken care of. I add a micro Kephart (3" blade) to the mix if I'm hiking, camping, working outside etc. Anything else, is extra. Do you carry more than one slipjoint? I know many of us carry a modern folder in the rotation, usually with one slipjoint.

To add, over the weekend I was just messing about. I had my peanut and Tribal spear, and also had my single blade 15 Charlow spear with a long pull (whew that was a mouthful), my 92 Eureka jack, and my 47 Viper.

Yeah, that's too many ;)...

I often carry two slipjoints, and I'll have a couple of small Leatherman tools about me too. If I'm hiking I like a small FB too :)

I carry several slipjoints, usually a single blade at a little under 4" and then either a 2 blade Jack of some kind or a Medium Stockman.

Right now I have 6 slipjoints in my pockets :) I have no money, might as well carry knives.

I've recently taken to carrying one traditional slipjoint and a SAK. If I'm being honest with myself either one is perfectly adequate for my daily needs, the SAK especially, but my passion for knives is in traditional slipjoints so I like to have one of those on me and then the SAK for added utility and hard use tasks.

Today I'm carrying my Ken Erickson 3.5" edc with a single spearpoint blade (in my avatar) and a SAK Cadet. The Cadet is also likely to be replaced with a Pioneer. The SAK is a great addition to a traditional slipjoint for me. It's good for hard use and provides some extra tools that come in handy (cap lifter is always a nice thing to have on hand).

I do not currently own a modern one handed folder and don't see any particular need for one at this point.

This will be embarrassing! A year ago, and the 45 years before that going back to when I started college, I carried no slipjoints, although I did have an original Leatherman in my bag starting in the 90s. Today, and for the past couple of months at least, I always have a Vic Classic, a Vic Electrician, and a Case peanut. Along with that, I usually carry a couple of other slipjoints that rotate on a weekly basis; this week they're a Rough Rider sowbelly stockman and a Belknap Blue Grass barlow. The rotating knives rarely get used in daily activities, but I like to occasionally look at 'em. Oh, and there's a DMT EF credit card in my billfold. I'm going to need a bigger belt (or maybe suspenders):D

All this "hardware" is certainly unnecessary and, to the majority of people, kind of stupid. But life is probably more enjoyable for me now than it was a year ago!

No it's not!

Dan, look at me! Repeat after me; "We are the afflicted and obsessed. We are knife knuts. We make no apology for carrying more knives than we need, because we like it. And we vow to never grow up!"

There, now we have that out of the way. We can drive ourselves into some kind of guilt trip with how many knives we carry, but I won't go there. I carry my classic on my keys, a sometimes two other knives. My Northwoods stockman is a regular, and the resolza and zuava or my old Wenger SI take turns in the rotation. I realized a long time ago that I will never be one of almost mythical 'one knife' men. I'm a blade floozy and I admit it, and will never mend my ways until my wake. All my friends and family know I'm a knife knut and proud of it. I know I grw up in and era where every man wh had pants on had a pocket knife in one of those pockets. Well, if Ihave my pants on, sometimes there's actually a pocket knife in every pocket. Sometimes.

Never feel bad about having two many pocket knives on you. Look how many pieces of jewelry a woman will have on sometimes. At least I load myself down with objects that actually have a real world use.

I'm an afflicted knife knut and proud of it!

In the pockets???

For me, the answer is almost always 2.

EDC Pair by Pinnah, on Flickr

When I get bored with this combo, I swap the Opinel for something else, like my Buck 500. Or something else else.

I keep a full sized MT in my day pack, but that's not in my pocket. I also like to mess around with fixed blades but rarely carry them. Usually not "good weight" for the way I move about in the backcountry.

In-pocket today (& typically most days):
  • Schrade 8OT stockman
  • Case 10375 SS stockman
  • Case 2137 SS Sod Buster Jr.
  • Leatherman Micra (on my key ring)
I think 8 blades total and a pair of scissors should do it... :D

Whatever floats your boat. The only reason I try to pare down sometimes is so I actually use the knives I've got on me. I give them duties: "you, toothpick, are in charge of cutting up steak and apples. And you, Stockman, will be on box opening, string cutting, and general knife duty today. Radio Jack, do you think you can open this beer?" Could the stockman handle all of this? Maybe. well it cant open a beer, but a bic lighter or the edge of a table can do that. I enjoy using them and want them to get their shot in the day's work. Sometimes one or two are just there because they make a good worry stone or its going to be a very boring day and I want something to marvel at on a break from work. Its not that I feel a moral inclination to carry less it just helps with the decision making process to limit the number I'll take. Oh and I dont wear very baggy pants either.

Today I am carrying one slipjoint in my pocket. Victorinox Alox Cadet. So far I haven't needed it for anything. If I go through the whole day not using it for anything, then I guess one was "too many."

One slipjoint and a SAK Classic work for me. And a small fixed blade in a pocket sheath when I'm hiking.
Seems that some of you wear pants with huge pockets though :D

Every once in a while I'll carry a second if I have a particular purpose in mind. For example, today I took a vic farmer because I knew the punch would be required. Usually, I just carry one. I have no need for more and I don't like unnecessary clutter about my person.

But that's just me, you want to carry six... Then go for it :)

Just a normal workday here;

LFP - #42 in clipped pocket sheath, #81 in pocket
RFP - #92 Champlin in pocket sheath, Sebenza clipped
WP - #77 Washington
LRP - #36 Sunfish alongside wallet

Some think it's odd, I think it's normal. Lucky for me my opinion is the only one that counts :p

Things haven't been the same for me, since I found some new jeans at Costco with a 'cell phone' pocket where the 'watch pocket' used to be. Just that one pocket is big enough to carry both of my large stockman knives vertically, side-by-side, and extra room for a third of equal size, if the urge struck... :D

I've stopped carrying my big Vic sak on my belt, in part because the horizontal sheath has blown another seam. Having enchieved my grail knife, I was going out with just that, when I felt the chill of not having any screwdrivers on me. So lately it's the mini trapper wharnie and a small 2-layer vic.
