Too many in the pocket?

I usually only 3 in total and only one in a pocket

a single blade in my front jeans pocket - I have a slip pocket sewn into the lining

something on my belt - Usually a GEC

something in my bag - usually a ALOX SAK

Two for me. A Rough Rider trapperlock, which doubles as an office food knife for me and a rough rider mini barlow.

I'm about to order a Buck Deuce or Lancer to see if I can rotate back to just one pocket edc.

Does anybody carry a sharpening stone, and only one knife? That would make the most sense to me. (of course, there isn't much 'sense' in owning, and using the amount of knives I do :D)

I find that at work, I need to keep one knife 'scary' sharp, and have a user that I can easily sharpen. A 2-blade jack is the minimum for a work knife, if not a sodbuster and a peanut for one work knife and one to keep sharp.

I carry a day pack with me everywhere. In it, I have a small organizer pouch that has a small 1st aid kit, pens, a lighter and things I need often enough to have nearby but not so constantly that I need them in my pocket. Among this set of stuff is a credit card holder with things like insurance and library cards. And that is where I keep a DMT credit card stone.

I find the DMT credit card stone will quickly touch up any knife I own, even the harder to sharpen 440C blades.

I do a bit of wood working and demand a sharp blade for that. The DMT stone allows me to get hair popping edge any time I need it.

Funny that you mention that, because I bought medium and super fine DMT stones when I saw you mention them a while back, because I wanted to sharpen the 440c on my Erics jack, which I had never sharpened before. Now I often carry the Erics jack, with the fine DMT stone in my wallet just in case.

Yes, all the time. If I have my pants on, then my wallet is with me, and I always keep a few items in my wallet to include a Eze-Lap diamond sharpener. Sometimes, like going downtown, I don't carry but one knife, a small SAK. Or traveling. Then my wallet gear goes to work.

I don't really use my knives that much during the day to where I'd need to resharpen. However, I have a little impromptu set of sharpening tools at my desk at work - several coffee mugs that happen to have different "grits" of ceramic ring on the bottom, and a couple of pieces of cardboard that I rubbed some green polishing compound into to serve as strops. I can put a working edge on a traditional knife (or anything without a fancy steel that needs diamonds) with that setup (assuming it didn't need major re-profiling in the first place).

Old timer jr stockman in pocket, benchmade 560 osborne clipped in opposite pocket....often lay under heavy equipment on job and take loose knife out and leave in back pack cause I find it on the ground sometimes....can't warm up to a hanky in pocket holding it down cause it feels like a small pillow in there....

Once upon a time I had a job that required a lot of cardboard box cutting. I would have to sharpen all 3 blades of a large stockman every other day. So I got in the habit of carrying a 4” stockman for work and a 3 ¼ stockman for myself. That way I would always have one sharp knife. Keep that habit for a few generations even though I didn't need two knives any more.
I still carry two but as a result of you enablers, the patterns have changed a bit. Main knife these days is usually a Queen Railsplitter, with it I really don't need a second..
The Queen #51 BEM Dogleg is replacing the mini stockman more & more as my second knife.
If I'm fishing I carry a Kabar stockman because it's 440C, don't want to take the effort to care for a knife when there's fish to be caught.

I have a small Fiskars keychain sharpener that is nothing more than plastic with 2 ceramic rods in a V. It keeps my blades shaving sharp. It's very small so I have tossed that in a pocket to run my SAK a few strokes through as needed.

It's two knives for me most days. One is a Vic Classic, color and style depending on whim (I have 5 or so on hand). The second varies — but it's often an SAK too. Today, it's a Wenger SI, tomorrow...?

More than two seems excessive or at least "surplus to requirements." But if I'm carrying only one, odds are good it'll be a Classic.

You guys bring up some many questions and differing philosophies of carry! 3 is 2, 2 is 1....single blade carry, multi knife carry, multi blade/single knife carry, high end durable steel carry vs simpler steels that are easier to field sharpen so many decisions...

I hate to admit that I love trying new steels. I have a I've of good old 440c but s35v and Elmax have really tickled me as of late. I still carry softer steels on a daily basis though for just that reason, I can turn over a coffee cup or quickly strop the edge on a notepad! Decisions decisions!

I usually carry two..... in my watch pocket it's a Peanut or Alox Cadet..... Left front is a bandana/handkerchief and another slippie.

... My Northwoods stockman is a regular...I'm an afflicted knife knut and proud of it!
:D

Don't you just love the Northwood, I think it came out superb and is one of my favorite forum knives, it even aged well

That's the spirit!!!

Somebody buy this guy a beer!

Might as well but me two and then I'll buy the next two. :)

Ted, I noticed one day that I had about $500 worth of sharps in my pocket, and only $20 in my pocket clip.

I had all the forum knives with me one day I was showing a friend and we totaled up the cost with my Sebenza and my custom Nealy by the time we finished adding up I was carrying $1,700 in knives. We're a sick bunch but I'm never without a knife.:)

I've recently turned modern for my EDC work requirements Seb 21 small and a Leatherman Surge .
I used to carry a Traditional and the Surge , but most of my Traditional's are Carbon blades and I work with corrosive materials quite often and I found I was babying them and they were only getting carried for sentimental rather than true requirement . I dug the Seb out of the cupboard and I'm really appreciating it as a work tool .
But .
After work and weekends is where my new love affair with SAK's comes into play .
I rotate through a few different models depending on what I'm doing .
What has surprised me after reading through this thread is how many people carry a SAK as a secondary knife .

Ken

Just the swayback gent for boxes and bags if I'm working indoors, because I take 5 kitchen knives with me everywhere.
If I work outdoors I put a Laguiole in my vest and sometimes a serrated spyderco on my belt, so three at the most.

Rarely more than one knife, since I favor multiblades. If I have need of a really large, beefy blade, I usually add a 4½ to 5 inch OHO to my usual stockman or jack.

On my belt is a Victorinox Spirit S.

RF pocket, Victorinox Executive and Spyderco Pacific Salt SE (carried unclipped).

L cargo pocket, Case or Buck stockman.

On work days, Spyderco Tasman Salt SE in LF pocket.

So I guess between 4 and 5 different knives or knife-related objects. I don't feel guilty about it. In the past, I have made do with only one knife for a decade, a Victorinox Spartan, and did just fine. But I like knives, and often use my knives/tools for different applications. If I traveled to another country again, I'd choose an SAK (or two) again.

I normally carry two with me, a peanut (of course) and something a bit larger, which of late has always been my Vic tinker gifted to me by a friend. I find the added tools of the SAK to be incredibly useful at work, even though I've never been a massive fan of SAKs.

Edit: of course with my arm busted I'm having to carry a cheap and nasty OHO "tacticool" thing until my Huckleberry razor #15 gets here!

Today I have a queen jack in my right pocket, case trapper in my back pocket a leatherman wave on my belt and a Vic classic on my keys. Not including other things I carry with me. My other half laughed at me the other day gettin ready, and informed me that if earth ever decided to lose its gravity that I would still have 2 feet planted firmly on the ground with all the stuff in my pockets.
