Too much?

i typically go out with nothing more than my EDC slipjoint.

but now i often have a bark river nebula also, if i remember to grab it on the way out. if i think it will come down to it, i toss in the fiskars hatchet or my big saw (i really need to get a folding saw).

i have carried a pile of knives in the woods at once before...but i found that i hardly ever actually used my knife anyways when i was hiking. the only time i really use my knife are practicing skills, food prep, or making fire. so i cut back on the amount i carried since i don't like carrying alot of weight.

basically, i think that you should carry whatever makes you feel comfortable and you feel is necessary.

.

i got a really nicec folding saw at sears hardware for $2.50, so if you happen to be at a sears hardware, id keep an eye out for it.

here is a picture of it next to some other good values:

barberfobic, i'll keep my eye out. we don't have a sears near me really, but i should have a couple of bucks knocking around in the next couple of days that i can take over to ACE and see if they have anything that appeals. i suppose if nothing else i could just order one of the fiskars slide saws offline.

look down at your feet. . . if you are slowly sinking into the ground, you might have packed too much.

Really, though- even fairly large knives weigh very little compared to things like food, Water, and kitchen sinks.

I put a 50 pound weight limit for the amount of knives I bring along on a hike. I find anymore to be over kill.

50 pounds????

my whole kit weighs less then 10, thats water and snacks for the day plus a few emergency supplies.

I used to like lots of extra stuff in the field, sometimes just to play with! :D Lately, I've tended more toward finding multiple uses for what I do carry. I think you need to satisfy yourself first. Take what you like, and have all the fun that you can! ;)

sounds like a plan bro

'Spose that day hike turns into an unexpected night in the woods :p

Why would you need a saw for an unexpected night in the woods ?
Maybe it's because of where I live but I can easily construct a shelter without having to saw up wood !

actually i carry an ultra-lite weight tarp with me when hiking.

i use the saw more for practicing skills, :)

There ya go then !

It actually just comes down to what room you have and what weight you are prepaired to carry eh !
If you like to use the saw and have room then hell keep it with ya !!!!
Some people on here even claim to carry an axe when they go for day hikes !!!!!!!
A tent is lighter than an axe so if I had to choose between carrying an axe to make a lean to or sleeping in a nice tent ,well ya get the idea !!!:D

I have determined what the limit is for carrying knives, etc in the woods. I had this epiphany just a few short hours ago. It only applies when one is hiking with another person. When one has to carry the gear for someone else, that someone has too much damned gear and should be flogged...

A saw, at least for me, excels at wood procurement for a fire in rainy weather.

Please don't think I'm on your case bro cos but I'm curious as to why the saw benefits you in that situation ?
I can find plenty of wood on the floor and can easily split it with a knife to get to the dry inner or use my knife to make fuzz sticks !

i'll have to throw up a pic of my kit sometime and let it be judged by all :D
