Too nice to EDC?

For me, the price of a knife is not the main consideration when it comes to using it or not.

There are certain knives that I just love handling, looking at, and/or displaying.
I don't to see them with scratches or any other blemishes from use.
Some were not expensive.

I don't buy expensive knives, the most expensive knive I ever bought was EUR 65. I buy knives with the intention to use them, but I must admit that I have currently collected too much knives to use all of them. Some of them haven't seen my pocket, belt or rucksack for many months.

I don't buy queens. Seems a little foolish to me. I intend to use everything I buy, so I don't spend a ton on my blades. I try to keep in mind how pissed I would be if I lost a knife that cost over $100.

I buy my knives with the intention to carry and use, but some end up on the shelf anyway if it gets taken out of EDC rotation.

I definitely don't condemn any people for buying a knife and not using it; if I ever get a real nice katana for example, I would just put it on a wall and fondle it once a while.

I think if you're affraid to use it....you've wasted your money. But that's just my take on things.

Other people might get a lot out of merely LOOKING at the thing. I don't.

I can't imagine losing a knife of that price.

More expensive usually also means you ALWAYS know where it is.

I use all my knives. That's why I brought them. I can appreciate the art jewelry type knives and the guys that buy em, to each there own. I am just not into it.

I love and trust my Umnums though and they get used regularly and I know too that CRK will take care of me.

I'm not afraid to use the knives I've owned, as my EDC for the past 3.5 years was a Sebbie, but I have been pretty careful how it was used(for the most part). If you look at a lot of members' knives, they're pretty much prisitne and they say they're using them. I never really used my Seb hard, but it looked much worse than most I've seen here. Is your definition of "using" easy cuts of string, light food prep, envelopes, etc,..or is it cutting drywall, scraping material, outdoor use, etc,..? Eventhough they are both "use", the two are pretty different. Just recently, I started carrying a $100 FFG Delica and I find I'm far less worried about actually using it, especially at work(Fire Service). As result, the Seb has been put in its box. I don't know how long it will stay there, but I have come to the conclusion I'm a lot more comfortable with the idea of really using a $100 knife over a $300+ one. That probably doesn't help you, but my take is to try and figure out how much money you're willing to spend on something that might get damaged should you use it too hard.

To me, price has nothing to do with it, if I like the functionality and dependability I am going to carry and use it. This was my EDC for nearly two years before I got some of Rick Menefee's knives and now they are my EDCs.

I won't buy a knife I can't EDC, although I will (and recently did) buy a knife I probably won't carry much if at all. I could carry it because it's a very well thought out and functional design, just too darn pretty. . .

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

i am thinking about a sebenza or a "custom" ti framelock from reese weiland built around a emerson or spyderco blade next summer. the sebenza is like 365 or so, not sure about the weiland---and ill use em like there is no tomarrow:D:D

While there are a lot of nice knives out there, very few are what I would consider art. So most knives IMO are users. Of course there are expensive users and inexpensive users. I have some of both, but they all get used.

The way I look at it is this - If I can't afford to use a knife, I can't afford it.

Just got a new Benchmade 635BK mini Skirmish and i doubted for 2 days to use it because they are becoming hard to find and it's good looking.
But now i don't care anymore and i'm going to use it, it's very cool knife.

Kind of like a poor mans Sebenza

The price has nothing to do with whether or not I will carry a knife or not. If I like it, I am going to carry it.

I know some people here have a 100 knives or more. Do these same people claim they "use all there knives" or "don't buy a knife that I don't intend to use"?

If you own a 100 knives you would only be able to "use" it about 3 days PER YEAR! I for one don't consider this use.

Good point! Another thing I take into consideration is the knife itself. I have some that are 1 of 8, 1 of 12, and prototypes that never made it into production. Those live in the safe, but may be carried on very special occasions. I have enough beaters and multiples to last me a lifetime.

I don't have any folders that don't get used. I do however have multiple bali-songs that don't see any use at all and that's just because they are illegal for me to carry. I'm not opposed to having safe queens though, I intend to be a collector whenever the funds permit.

I edc my sandblasted small plain sebenza.
I'd consider an inlaid small sebenza right on the borderline, and a unique small sebenza (intricate machined graphic/polished) too nice to EDC.
