Too nice to EDC?

Yes I do have some knives I do not carry but they are old collectables I have snooped out over the years. This is a very small portion of my knives and as a rule I do not buy knives that I do not intend to carry.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a few knives that I hesitate to use for much more than opening an envelope because I don't want to degrade the condition. I have been enjoying them just from the occasional fondling. However, after hearing what the majority of you have to say on the subject, I think I will stop worrying about it so much and start actually using them for what they are made for. There are a couple that are irreplaceable, and they will stay in the drawer, but the others should provide me even more enjoyment as users. Thanks for the perspective.

I'm actually surprised by alot of the responses here. The way my collection works is that I have two drawers. One drawer is for my users and one drawer is for knives I'll probably never carry. Granted that most of these are automatics and balisongs that are illegal in NY, but even if they weren't I probably still wouldn't carry them. Something about a mirror polished Brend grind that I just can't bring myself to use. Some are First Productions and others are the backup I have for a knife that is currently in the user drawer. There are some that are just too pretty to eff up when I already have a ton of users.

Holy shit! My 1,000th post!

I can't imagine losing a knife of that price.

More expensive usually also means you ALWAYS know where it is.

Exactly. I hate losing any of my blades. I am currently tearing apart everything I own trying to find the CRKT M16 my brother gave me when he got back from Iraq. It was my EDC til it disappeared when I moved. :(

grats on 1k posts:) Im almost there as well

I have knives I use and others are safe queens, cost has nothing to do with it though.

I would recommend getting a smaller knife like Boker Subcom or better yet Gerber EAB and carry it in addition to your expensive knife that you so afraid to carry and use. This will let you have your bigger (or not so much bigger) most favorite knife with you. You get all the comfort, looks, features of your pride and joy when showing it off, and using it for light every day tasks (cutting soft material and such). Your favorite knife will stay pristine for a very very very long time. And if you need to perform a task that most likely will scratch or damage your knife, just use Gerber EAB (or whatever).

I carry my Strider PT most of all, and I'm not afraid to using it, but I like to carry EAB or Subcom just in case. Like when I needed to cut a whole bunch of wire mesh material on a screen doors. I could use Strider, I would care less if I put more scratches on it, but I knew that task will dull the blade pretty bad, so I just used Gerber EAB, and replaced the blade later on. No sharpening, no problems. If you carry Boker Wharcom you can actually open cans with it (not comfortable, but doable) and your Sebenza (Benchmade, Spyderco, Whatever) will stay safe. Anyways, most likely 95% of your everyday tasks will be a light use (unless you have some special job) and you can carry and use your baby without feeling bad about it.

Also, if you tend to carry big knives, having sub-2" folder on you will help to avoid scaring people in some situations.

If someone will ask to borrow a knife for a second, give them this small inexpensive knife (or don't give anything at all) and don't worry about it.

If I only bought knives, that I intend to use, I would never buy another knife. I have about 20 users and abought 10 times that amount, that I don't use.

I EDC'ed an Elishewitz($600) I respected the knife and beat it up at the same time. I started to EDC a RJ Martin($500) but really felt like the BG-42 half serrated large Sebenza, was betrayed by my infidelity, and now she'll always be there.

Honestly nothing will ever be too costly if you really love it, BTW I make a laughable income and don't give a damn about money but have what our forefathers called "pride of ownership."

I have some knives bought not to be used.
I thought they are too nice to use and sharpen.
I thought I could hold myself back from using them.

But I realized that the nicer the blade is, harder to resist the temptation to use.

No line... I use them all if I like them.
EDCing Lochsa S90V for last few years and BM 710 M2, which BTW is keep getting expensive. First the M2 folder, then another 710 to get the Al scales and install on EDC, then sent to bodycote for BC coating, then sent to Phil Wilson for rehaerdening.
Then another M2 blade went for polishing (after rehardening) and then regrind...
If I add all that up my 710 M2 comes well over 500...

That was poetic. :D

I have abuse knives, EDC knives and collection knives. Even my small collection of knives have more knife than I can use in a lifetime so if I were smart, I should sell some and use the rest. But I'm not that smart; just ask my wife. ;)

I use every knife I own, unless I have decided I won't keep it, and am planning to sell it...

Here are a few of my knives getting ready to be used right before a "chopoff" I held a few months back. These run the gamut from ~$50 to ~$800, and I've beaten every one of them plenty hard.

That's pretty close to me. I think the most I've spent for a knife is ~$70, but if I did buy an expensive knife, it would still get used.

I once got a Benchmade for about $100 long long time ago when I was single. It was sorta pure accident and at that time I really had no idea who or what Benchmade was. I sold it later and guy was pretty happy to get it...otherwise, $70-ish is looking like my upper limit also. But no problema, so many good knives below that price.
