Took my M-43 out for some brush chopping last week.

I have several acquistions, all far to beautiful to put in a box, most not even in their sheath.

Everyone perfect, even the blems for their intended purpose.

Man can not live properly with only one or two knives. One or two boxes (large) maybe, three would be better.

JD,
The idea I'm entertaining for the right khukuri (for me) is a compromise package between chopping ability & practical on-body carry.
I don't want to strap on one of the hand axes, one'll be carried in the breakdown bag in the Yamaha, but I want a blade capable of doing more wood processing with less effort than a small belt knife can pull off, using less science & more sheer force. :)

I'll still have a 4-inch belt knife on me, for finer cutting tasks.

That's my goal.
Kinda sorta like you. I've got at least 75 knives of all sorts here, but I'm looking to standardize on those for motorized expeditions.
Denis

That was kind of my goal too, with the addition that I wanted something more hard hitting than my 22 oz Coldsteel khukalike.
The more I use & carry my new 18" M-43, the more I find my desires are being met. Best of all, its size & heavier weight does not make it unduly cumbersome.
Still very comfortable to hip carry, like I've shown in my OP, b/c the overall length of the sheath rig is 3" above my knee. So I still have full mobility & can kneel down without the sheath's tip punching the ground... Of course I'm also 6' 4".

I started making a wilderness shelter in my backyard amongst the privet forest & the performance is outstanding. I don't have a scale to weigh it, but I'm guessing it's in the 30-36 oz range; judging solely by feel as compared to the CS khukalike. Man this M-43 chops like a mo-fo. :D

I believe it! :)

Glad you've found what works for you.
Only way I can see to carry one that long on-body in the ATV is some sort of drop-leg rig that'd let it ride low enough to clear the bucket seat.

Not quite sure I want to go that route....

You use yours mostly one handed, or two?

One handed always.
I never tried using it 2 handed. My one hand takes up most of the handle. The wide flare of the pommel sticks out about a half inch from my grip; which really keeps the khuk locked in my hand throughout the swing. That, along with the fat palm swell, really makes a nice stable grip for me. It feels like the handle is custom made for my hand.
& the best part of all... NO hot spots.

The entire handle on the CS khukalike is a hot spot. I hate that rubbery atrocity. For years, I fantasized about stripping it off & making a micarta handle for it; but never got around to it, b/c gloves where such a convenient, instant gratification answer to that problem. :thumbdn:

Know what you mean about the CS handle. I have one too. It can be abrasive.

I have no issues with the CS handle, but knowing how good a well shaped, solid khukuri handle can feel like, I'd also love to have a nice Micarta handle made for my Gurkha. There is a really nice stabilized wood re-handle I've seen which haunts my dreams. It's one of my favorite blades of all time and this handle would be sweet!

Turok,
I've seen videos with people using a two-handed hold on a large khukuri & seen forum mention of long handles, didn't know how long your handle was.

So- who does re-handling on things like the Cold Steels?

I've seen Nutnfancy use a M-43 two handed, same size as mine, in his HI review. I thought you where referring to using it like that.

Will do Steve.

ETA: Steve, I tried to email. It doesn't even look like there's an option to leave a visitor message anymore on our profile pages.

In the name of all that is good and holy, please don't be under the impression he knows what he's doing. IMHO he looked like a maniac trying to break into a crackhouse during that review.

I still have an email option for Steve Tall, but I don't for you. I think in the options page you have to turn it on.
It could be since yours isn't turned on, it doesn't allow you to see his?

This computer stuff gives me brain pain.

JD,
Dude, you be slammin' my hero!
Srsly, you need to adjust your POU.

Whatevs.....

I don't mind Nutn, especially since he brought quite a bit of business to HI. I'm not going to lie, I've used my m-43 (before I sold it) with a two handed grip and it actually works pretty well that way.

Ill have to agree there. That review could have gone either way but glad it at least went good on HI. Never heard of the guy before he did the HI review but im not impressed with any of his reviews. To each his own tho.

I dont see how you guys can use a khuk two handed? I tried it a few times and you cant get any acceleration out of it with two hands. It seems to totally undo every advantage the khukri has over traditional western handles. Just my experience tho. Id be more inclined to switch hands with it than use both.

I fear for your immortal soul.
To reject the wit & wisdom of Nutn is...unutterably unthinkable.

I live by his words.
