This is for reference. Post your 20 knives that can't be missed. New, old, cheap, expensive. Knives don't have to be in any specific order.

Moderators please sticky, I believe it will help new members and any one else to find a knife they can use, afford, and love.

Please include as much info as possible in your posts i.e. blade and handle specs, price and why it is a must have. Also, please keep comments and questions relevant and to a minimum as this is primarily for informational use.

Thank you for all of your help.

Explain how all this info will help again. Will someone graph the info or categorize it in some way. If you have 20 or more posters, you may end up with 20 different list that have no common knives. That could be quite confusing I would think to a person new to knives....;)

Agreed. I think a better idea would be for a newbie to start reading and asking questions about knives that THEY are interested in, not someone else's top 20. That's what we're here for . . .

As far as most commonly recommended to beginners goes,

Spyderco Delica - $50, Small
Spyderco Endura - $50 Medium-large
Spyderco Tenacious - $30 Medium
Spyderco Para military - $120 Small
Spyderco Military - $120 Large
Spyderco Sage I/II - $90/150 Small
Spyderco Salt line - $50, Small to medium
Spyderco Manix2 - $70 Medium
Benchmade Griptilian - $65 Medium
Benchmade Mini-griptilian - $55 Small
Benchmade 710 - $100 Large
Benchmade 940/943 - $120 Medium
Kershaw Blur - $50-70 Medium
Kershaw Skyline - $30 Small
Kershaw RAM - $55 Medium
Kershaw Leek - $40 Small
Victorinox/Wenger SAK - $20-30 Small to Large
RAT Izula - $50 - Small
RAT RC-3/4/6 $80-100 Small to large
Buck 110 $30-40 Medium-large

I've only listed knives in the more affordable price range, because honestly, if you're getting into XM-18s, Chris Reeves, Striders, Busses etc. then you don't need a thread like this. As such, I took a rough stab at prices a beginner can expect to pay and the blade size for each knife. I agree with bakakanoosh that this type of list is very hard to make sense of but it may be a good jumping off point.

We would just end up recomending one of the knives here on the list. And it's a safe bet that a lot of people here aquired the knives on their list by asking in this very forum. Ergo, if a new member trusts us to recomsnd a knife they might as well look to our picks to head them in the right direction. And let's be honest, most of us have good blades due to the forums. Have faith my friend.

Why on earth would you want to "sticky this thread"?

There are no "20 knives that can't be missed."
Collections vary as to purpose.
Some like hunting knives. Some like woodcraft knives. some collect brands. Some collect pocket knives. Some collect traditionals. Some collect tactical desigsns. Some collect steels. etc.

But most people who ask about a knife here are looking for a knife for a purpose. So to have a random list of knives tht they just HAVE to have will only confuse them further .

When somebody asks for a knife suggestion, the first things we ask are,
"What are you going to use it for?
How much do you want to spend?
What size should it be?"

You have no such information. These aren't even categorized as to fixed or folding. Therefore your lists are useless for the average new person looking for a knife. They have meaning only to those who already are familiar with the subject.
