Top 5 "must-have" knives in a lifetime...

  • Victorinox Swiss Army Knife
  • Buck 110/112
  • Spyderco Endura/Delica
  • Leatheman Wave
  • Kabar USMC Fighting Knife

1) Sebenza, small regular.
2) Puma White Hunter, stag, pre 1990's.
3) Any Dozier.
4) Victorinox Soldier.
5) Original Super Tool.

I'm surprised so few have listed their favorite custom maker... if you're going to dream, dream big!

My top 3 would be a Damascus Bagwell bowie, a Loveless drop-point and an early Randall. I'd round it out with a Ka-Bar and Buck 110 as production examples.

P.S. Five knives is too few ;) Maybe 5 knives per decade, to show the evolution of designs in the last, say, 50 years would be interesting too...

Here are seven that I would recommend to a new accumulator interested in seeing the widest variety of good quality, inexpensive knives in as few purchases as possible:

1- Schrade USA Old Timer, 34OT
2- Opinel
3- AG Russell FeatherLite or Hunters Scalpel
4- Buck 119 and/or 110
5- Bark River fixed blade
6- Swiss Army knife, by Victorinox or Wenger, any style
7- vintage Bruckmann slipjoint

For my own lifetime accumulation goal, it's simply "One of each that I find interesting". :D

Benchmade 710 high speed or D2 steel.

I gotta think about the other 4
could take a while :-D

Sebenza
Buck 110
-still thinking on number 5

Well I see a lot of custom knives in these list but I am not a true Custom man!

Here is my list!
Buck 103 Skinner
Master of Defense CQD Dieter
Gerber 1980's Folding Hunter
50's or 60's Case XX 3 Blade Stockman
Last but not least a good ol Ka-Bar USMC:D

BM 710, Spyderco Endura/Delica, any good Swiss Army knife, any good multi tool, and a SNG or Sebenza (depending on your taste).

1. A custom multi-blade slipjoint
2. Something from Randall Knives
3. A custom hand forged fixed blade
Still thinking about the last two "must haves"

Classic (If I were to live in the past  )
  1. Randall (The original knife with a name)
  2. SAK (Timeless)
  3. Buck 110 (The Workhorse)
  4. Ka-Bar (Everybody has to have one it's like the 1911)
  5. Classic Switchblade (Just Because)

Modern (Currently in the time I'm living :D )
  1. Busse (Best Materials Best Geometries Best Ergonomics Future Randall)
  2. Leatherman (Technically not a knife but our times require more than a blade and maybe a SAK)
  3. Benchmade (modern Buck 110)
  4. Becker & Spyderco & Cold Steel (This guys are making knives everybody can afford)
  5. Microtech Auto (Again)

Don't know if I can list must-haves, per se, but from my own limited experience I think anybody who likes knives should have a chance to handle a folder from Tom Mayo. I love my TNT to pieces and would sing its praises to anyone.

I have to add a couple to my earlier post. A Schrade 80T, and I believe the Manix will be on these lists a few years from now. Hopefully Spyderco won't change the production on these too much in the future.

From the last 50 years, I lean toward the classics and generally don't include any custom knives. My picks would be:
Medium Sized Case pocket knife-your choice
Buck 110
Schrade Old Timer 60T
Case or Schratt & Morgan Canoe or Mt. Man
Vic Tinker Swiss Army

Customs and Factory Customs:
Any Moran Damascas blade
Loveless
Randall No. 1
and probably a Dozier fixed blade

Spyderco Dodo

Emerson CQC-14 Snub-Nose

Strider PT

Al Mar SERE 2000

Emerson Police Sark

Looks like a lot of similiar thoughts here. My five are:
(1) Buck 110
(2) Case Redbone Handled Stockman
(3) Victorinox - Soldier or something like a Tinker, Climber, Hiker, etc.
(4) Buck 119
(5) Good multi-tool of some sort

Just five definitely make it tough and there needs to be room for a Kabar, good machete, Case Trapper, whew the list might just be never ending!

I guess the classics are classics for a reason. And I reckon we're seeing some "new" classics establish themselves as well.

My point is, I'm not seeing flashy, gimicky, over-engineered knives on these lists...

My "all-time favorites" would be a different list (might share one or two in common), but these are the ones I can't imagine missing out on -- each one represents another dimension of the folding carry knife and triggered its own massive following and became a prototype for others to copy:

Buck 110
Victorinox (any)
Spyderco Delica
Leatherman
Kershaw Chive
