Top 5 "must-have" knives in a lifetime...

Benchmade 710
Spyderco Manix
Leatherman Wave (original)
Spyderco Endura
Victorinox SAK (camper?)

Man that's tough. There are so many others that belong on that list. It's interesting that my choices are similar to those of several other people in this thread. All the knives on my list are affordable and (with the exception of the original Wave) easy to find, so there's no reason any self-respecting collector couldn't pick up one of each.

I guess the classics are classics for a reason. And I reckon we're seeing some "new" classics establish themselves as well.

My point is, I'm not seeing flashy, gimicky, over-engineered knives on these lists...

My "all-time favorites" would be a different list (might share one or two in common), but these are the ones I can't imagine missing out on -- each one represents another dimension of the folding carry knife and triggered its own massive following and became a prototype for others to copy:

This is what I hoped would come from this thread, another perspective to refine my ever-changing "to buy" list. Great suggestions everyone.

Hmmm...

Very tough decision. I'm a bit of an old-schooler, so in no particular order, I might choose:

1. Buck 110
2. SAK (Victorinox or Wenger)
3. Schrade 8OT
4. Schrade 152OT Sharpfinger
5. Leatherman

I don't have a body of work to choose from some of the newer brands like the Benchmades, Spyderco's, Seb's, etc. They are great in their own right, but I based my decision on knives that I felt changed the industry in some way, or that when you think of a certain era or knife style, you immediately think of ???.

Interesting choices so far, though...

Can I step in with something that's been bothering me?

The knife makers name is Chris Reeve, not Chris Reeves.

Ugh.

I think he meant "Chris Reeve's Sebenza", just like you should have said "the knife maker's name is Chris Reeve".

Ugh.

Anyways... :)

1. Sebenza
2. Buck 110
3. Spyderco Lockback
4. Victorinox
5. Benchmade Axis lock

I think everyone should own a decent fixed blade......
Bark River or Busse.
And one of each type of lock so they know what locks they prefer.
Any Spyderco lockback.... Native or Delica
Framelock. Dominator, Buck Mayo, Strider, etc.
Slipjoint. Case or Queen. Your choice.
Axis lock. Benchmade!
Of course there are others, but a knife knut should be familiar with all of the types of knives out there!
And AT LEAST one full flat ground knife!

1. Swamp Rat M6
2. Busse Hell Razor
3. Schrade Sharp Finger
4.Case XX yellow bone handled Trapper
5. Swisschamp/Gerber Legend 800 series (Toss up between these two)

1. Microtech, not the new crap, but the 4+ year old versions when the quality was REALLY there.
2. Buck 110
3. Strider (any)
4. Busse (any)
5. Bill Harsey Jr. custom (patiently waiting for mine!)

Cheers

I guess my current residence is influencing my choices.

Being a Ranger fan, i think everyone should have at least one. But i could see not wanting to have certain knives forced on me... I suppose that's why there are so many knife makers, to accomodate all of the disperate inclinations out there...

Another large 10" bladed knife with a nice sweeping belly from a custom knifemaker. Can't have too many good Bowies.
