Top blade steels and why

I know why do you think I asked this question..to find something better
I suggest reading and thinking over some of the responses in this thread. Particularly M marcinek posts.

But just to give you a straight answer, since that's what you want...

For ME and MY uses, I really like:
S35VN
CPM154
M390
Elmax

There's no best steel and there's no best heat treatment. The X factor in this is the user. You need to know yourself and your use before you can find what suits well.

You have a good start with one good knife. Use that and see what you think.

Some people don't like stainless super steels because they are harder to sharpen. Some people don't like carbon or tool steels because they will rust or corrode more easily. You need to spend time with that one knife and the see what you think.

I never look for "best" I look for good enough.

When your gonna actually use your knife you can because in the past I've had many loose sharpness quite quick

Interesting because yesterday you said

I am fairly new to blades as I just picked up my first two a letherman supertool and benchmade 940..was looking to geta more gentlemen/ nicer knife. Was wondering what knife all you knowledgeable people would recommend for around $200-250ish with premium steel. I'd prefer metal handles not g-10 or micarda but not game changer..any knowledge is good knowledge

Thank you I've been deciding between elmax and m390

In a blind test between the 2, how would you know the difference?

I mean, you are welcome to go chasing exotic super steels, but it would be a disservice to you not suggest that might be wasting your money at this point in your "knife journey."

Thank you for your honest opinion without the cocky negativity

marcinek was correct in asking you: what do you like or don’t like about the 940? Knowing this would help greatly in giving suggestions.

Blade geometry and thickness is also something to look at. Depending on what your main use is, maybe a dull but deep belly would work better than a straight blade. After I started collecting and using different knives (about 10 years ago) i found out how important it is and have never paid much attention to steel until recently.

I’ve not sharpened my gerber sharkbelly (norm a supersteel) in about a month now and it still cuts paper. It’s used on boxes, wax, rope, sports tape, fruit, pretty much anything I can use it for as it’s my EDC and I’m a knife nut. Sometimes I’ll even type long ranting messages with it.

No one is being cocky or negative.

As I said, you are welcome to go spend a fortune on the sexiest new steel. Get something Cruwear.

But if you haven't been chasing steels for years and sharpening them and comparing them like the hardcore knife junkies here, you are probably not going to know the difference between it and VG10. I probably wouldn't.

That's not saying you are stupid, that is saying you are not a steel junkie.

Think wine. All of us who aren't wine junkies are not going to know the difference between a $20 bottle and a $750 bottle. So the $750 is a waste.

If you would like to know more about steel, it might behoove you read all you can, then post questions.

And in the meantime buy some lower priced quality knives in a range of steels and start seeing how they perform the tasks you want them to.

Get some 1095, VG-10, Case CV, a Vic SAK, something in AUS-8.
