Top Choice For Smaller EDC ?

I ordered a sprint run native5 knife but my other smaller knives are the bm 470 emissary, mini grip, spyderco urban, and the boker plus nano. My favorite out of all of those would be the mini grip for sure.

I love my Native and Native IIID. They are comfortable, handy, and very light, but don't give me that "pride of ownership" kind of feeling I get with some other knives. But the Native 5 looks like a knife you could be proud to show off. I like the looks of the Techno, but I don't know if I'd want to spend that kind of dough for a Made in Taiwan knife....

I have a bunch of Spyderco knives and the one I EDC'd the most was a Delica with the ZDP blade steel (which didn't impress me that much). I EDC'd a Cricket for a while, but its small size and heavy construction made it prone to coming out of my back pocket and I was sure it would be lost eventually.

I vote Native 5.

Stay sharp,

bh49 , where did u get those awesome scales for your Native 5 ? What kind of wood is it ? Did you do the swap yourself ?
Luke @ Cuscadi made scales from desert Ironwood. I install myself. I never took knife apart before. With Native5 it was quite simple.

Another vote for the Techno here. I bought it last month and it hasn't left my pocket since. The XHP steel is fantastic, all I have done to it so far is strop it back to hair popping sharp. Also, sheeple don't seem to mind this knife when they see it. I think it has to do with its small size and stout proportions. The only thing I don't like is that it can be difficult to slice certain materials. Everything else about the knife is top notch.

I haven't really found anything that matches up real well with the N5. If that's your gold standard here, you're probably not gonna find any serious competition for it in all areas. If you want some other suggestions from different maufacturers that haven't come up yet, you might consider Emerson's Traveler or Endeavor. They'll be in your specs for OAL and they'll have a feel somewhat similar to the N5 as far as weight and handle material. They'll be liner locks and 154CM instead of a backlock and S35VN, but they are another option. You also may want to look at A G Russell's One-Hand Knife. It's VG10 with a choice of handle materials. The blade length is 3" and the handle length is just shy of 4" so it's also in your specs.

Now that I look more closely ... the Chaparral CF and the Ti both look beautiful. Despite their thin .078" thick blades.

Despite? That is a big plus to me, makes for an awesome cutter.

A (too) thin blade is a turn off for me. I'm just used to thicker blade stock. But for a gentleman's edc I guess a thinner blade is the way to go.

But .078 just seems wicked thin. However , the looks of both the CF and Ti Chaps are enough to make me purchase one if not both.

Are the Chaparrals made in Tai Chung ?

yes. If you are planning to get CF variant, just wait a little. There blade steel upgrade in the works. New 2013 should have XHP, but probably dealers have S30V in stock.

Really. Thanks for the heads up.

Would you say that XHP is closer to M390 (in performance and edge retention) ?

I can't decide on just one. So I have chosen to buy a few. I will pick the lucky 3 by 5pm today and then pull the trigger.

As it stands :

Chap (I like CF and Ti but CF is a lot less expensive)
Native 5
Techno
Sage

That's my list. I also have a couple from BM and William Henry on the list too.

My pick is the Chaparral. Thin, light, good steel, solid construction and perfect fit and finish. There are currently 2 models to choose from (S30V and XHP steels).
