Top Soddie?

I've only tried out three brands of sodbuster, Kissing Cranes (which was a disappointment),.

I bought a Kissing Cranes sodbuster a while back and I too was disappointed. The blade had awesome snap - almost a nail-breaker, actually - and the blade appeared to be carbon non-stainless. Unfortunately, the blade and backspring were not centered and the wood grip had some deep cracks. I keep it at home as a beater.

I have CASE and a German Bull in stag which is better than you might think.
Anybody have any experience with Böker sodbusters in carbon made in Argentina? I'm getting an urge for one.
I have the Jr. My first impression is the bright yellow handle, isn't. It almost looks like light wood, but it is plastic. I don't have another soddie to compare, but the spring is real strong. Quality seems to be on par with Boker from Germany. Pretty sharp out of the box. I like interesting knives and a Boker from Argentina fits my idea of being interesting.

Eye Brand makes some good ones, too. The fit & finish is sometimes lacking, but the blade is outstanding. Not many companies grind their blades as well as Eye Brand.

Peter, is the colour on the Böker a lot different from the CASE yellow then? If you have one of course, thanks!

The picture makes it look more yellow than it really is. It almost looks like a light colored wood. It is a good working knife. I think it was around $11, I got it for Christmas.

Kissing Crane sodbuster style knife that I purchased was made in Italy. Seems very good comparable to the Case sod jr that I also have. The KC was called Brown Mule, I believe, and there is another called Coal Miner which is made in China.

Man, I'd like to see an "evolved" Soddie. Adjustable pivot screw, with a screw construction build and a pocket clip. Bring that knife up to speed.

Then it wouldn't be a sodbuster anymore. Let's leave the "lowly" sodbuster alone. You can always have a custom maker provide you with what you're after.
After all, it is the traditional sodbuster that we have come to love and laud here in this forum.

I love my old German made K.C. knife.Fit and finish is outstanding.I use it and abuse it without fear.It does have real monster snap. The new Non German stuff i wouldn't take free.Sorry.

Don't forget to post impressions of that Böker, OTHERWISE we may suspect the recantation was insincere:D

Sorry, BTB Post! But after a second thought, I ordered a Eye-Brand, yellow handled, Big Boy Soddie. I like that German steel! I'll post back.

Kissing Crane Coal Miners are China made. Can anyone tell me if the Black Angus model is German made? I see 'em on Ebay and the price is right. Also are the wood handles on the Brown Mule very thick? say compared to an Opinel #8. I feel the need to become a first time Sodbuster owner but I have never even seen one up close. Do all Soddies have liners? Have I asked enough questions now? Should I stop?:D

Last Time I heard, Coal Miners/Black Angus sodbusters were being made in Italy with stainless blades. They are an unusual construction, using a one piece plastic handle with a cavity/slot molded in. The liner/backspring/blade/pivot assembly slide into the end of the handle and are all held together by the pivot. They aren't a very traditional design, except perhaps superficially. They aren't a bad design, either. Simply optimized for low cost.

I have a large and small Kissing Crane Brown Mule, and both have rounded handles like an Opinel. My Eye Brand wood handled small sodbuster has rounded handles, too, although slightly flatter than the Kissing Crane. The Eye Brand yellow handled small sodbuster has flat handles, it is quite slim.

Bought my third Case Soddie. Two CV one SS. No nasty surprises just nice solid workmanship. If you're worried buy a Case.
