Top Soddie?

FWIW---"Yeller" Eye Brand Soddies, Big Boy and Jr., are on sale at Smoky MT. Knife Works.

Just bought the Case Sodbuster Jr. in stainless. Would have preferred the CV but the price was right, if this grows into a meaningful long term relationship I may get a yellow in CV. I have heard less than stellar reviews of Case stainless but my own experience has been okay so we'll see. Thanks for the input all. Now to camp out by the mailbox...;)

I was at Lowes today picking up some needed items and while there I picked up the Case Sodbuster Jr. in stainless for $17.99 in the plastic clamshell pack. Just couldn't pass it up.

Used my old 34OT to open the pack and put it to work immediately.

Opened two bags of mortar, cut some Lilacs for the Mrs., opened a couple more packages of stuff for my weekend rituals (home improvement/maintenance instead of fishing :( ).

Overall performance so far -

I've got a trip out of state tomorrow and will be stuck with one knife for five days (flying and don't want to risk losing more than one to the bagage gnomes). I usually take my Wenger SI but I think I'm going to take the Sodbuster Jr. this time. It'll give me a week to get to know this little knife.

I recieved a Lowes Gift Card for my birthday last weekend. I was at Lowes yesterday eyeballing the Sodbuster Jr. SS. Didn't get it. Anyway when I get home my brother comes over to use my skill saw and also brings me two of our late Grandpap's knives for me to sharpin. The one my nephew has been useing is.......... a Case SS Sodbuster Jr. Needless to say, I went back to Lowes today and bought me one. I'm about to put a killer edge on it! Next purchase will be the Yellow, CV Case Sodbuster. M

Report back, Chris. Have a good trip.

Well, I'm back. Wish I could say the same for my Sodbuster Jr. My checked bag didn't arrive in Detroit when I did at 2PM EST so I can't post any pics yet. The airline has found my bag and is delivering it to me sometime today. Hopefully in tact with all contents.

As for carrying the SB Jr. for the week while working in Atlanta, GA, it saw surprisingly little use. Opened some boxes and cut some tape here and there but no real abuse.

Inspection of the knife showed that it is an HC steel. After a week of Georgia humidity and sweat, it has some very light, barely noticable rust. Nothing that a good cleaning won't take care of.

It carried very well in the front pocket. Not much larger that a full size Bic lighter and just as comfortable. In fact, when in the same pocket as my Bic, I almost pulled out the Sodbuster instead of the lighter a couple times. Guess I'm not used to knives with slabs that smooth and without bolsters. ;)

If it shows up today, I'll get some pics and continue my report. So far, me likey. I can see a couple more Sodbuster Jr.'s in my future. :)

I have a yellow Queen in D2,A black Case in SS,and a yellow Case in CV. I am an ex butcher and the Case CV will take an edge as good as any knife I have ever sharpened. I have a red Bulldog on the way and will post pics of my quartet when it arrives. Luv them Georgia Bulldogs and my soddies!!!

I bought myself a Case CV Sodbuster Junior after reading so much about them on here. :D I'd always wanted one anyways!

Initial impressions out of the box, not that great. The edge grind was very uneven, side to side and front to rear, and covered with very large visible burrs. Also there is blade play. On the plus side, the spring tension is perfect and it opens and closes just as I would have asked a sodbuster to perform. I reworked the edge bevels on the Lansky sharpener, starting with the coarse diamond and working all the way to the ultrafine 1000 grit stone, and after wrestling with a burr for a little bit, got it ripping sharp. I carried the knife to work for a few days and it got some use, not a tremendous amount. The wide flat blade zips right through cardboard and plastic strapping easily, and it is one of the best carpenter pencil sharpeners I have ever used. Works well for slicing off excess wood in notch cuts where a circular saw won't get. The lack of a point makes the knife useless for picking out splinters, although I had expected that. I laid the knife on a hard wood block and tapped the joint rivet/pin or whatever it is with my hammer, but it did not tighten up any, so the blade play is still there. Annoying, but I guess forgiveable on a $17 knife. I have bought $100 knives with blade play too, but at that price point it would VERY disappointing. No patina developing yet, still shiny as can be. I'll keep using it daily, as I like it a lot. Classic old pattern of knife.

I haven't had any play in any of my soddies (to date), though I have had to remove a burr or two.

Perhaps I shouldn't jinx myself as I have a large 1980 (10 Dot) Case 2138 inbound.

Thanks, Everyone. It's good to hear so much interest in the Sodbuster! Thanks to Chickenplucker, I "had" to order a Red Bulldog!!

Well, my bag arrived yesterday afternoon with all contents.

It's raining here today so I couldn't get outside to take some good pics.

If I were the complaining type, I might have been put off by the uneven grind on my cheapie SB Jr. Since this one is a user, you'll get no complaints from me. I'm just pointing it out for others that might consider this less than acceptable fit and finish.

As you can see, the back side (pile side?) is over ground compared to the front (shield) side of the blade.

Otherwise, this knife is surprisingly well built and the fit and finish is more than I expected for $17.99.

Stag don't get no better than that, nice knife Blues
B-R

Thanks, B-R. I didn't even know about this particular offering by Queen until my buddy Thomason had put it up for sale a while back. Just got lucky that day.

BR---Very nice Soddie!
OK. I looked at some different brands of Sodbusters and Case is making the, overall, nicest one. And, I just ordered one. Thanks for the guidance, Gentlemen! And I use that term, loosely! JK. :)

I have enjoyed this thread since the sodbuster is a favorite pattern of mine. However the thread seems to be missing something. Any thread involving sodbusters should include at least one picture and mention of the rare and much sought after Hampton "Knutbuster".

Rare and elusive it is, but here is #2 Khnutbuster, just got it in. What timing to go with Robs' #1.
