TOPS Knives Exposed

Nice gear reviews/impressions. And it is nice to see a father spending some quality time with his child.

Of COURSE there's a Mistwalker thread on this knife, of course there is LOL

Mist, great pics and review, brother! I just picked up a TOPS Fieldcraft and had done a general search to see if there were threads on the knife and I saw your name and had to check it out. Another great thread!

Thanks man, and yeah, she is my world. I can't think of anyone else I'd rather hang out with :)

With those designs Im always wondering what happens to the steel under the handle?

Well, my old Schrades of uncoated 1095 were still going strong at 40 years old...

As said....Great post & thanks for sharin!
Great to get kids involved in the outdoors & see their excitement.

Great pics & review.

It's nice to see a Dad teaching the young ones right. In the past, young people were given responsibility at an early age and thrived. It's especially heartwarming when outdoors training is given to girls. Helps make them more independent & confident.

Thanks for the info bro  that's the kind of parent I want to be when it eventually happens
James.

I love the TOPS Scandis that are coming out. We used most of them in on the Bushcraft Global trip last month and they kicked ass.

Oh boy. Now I have to drop by and visit these folks in person. Here is the YT video they made regarding the stove. As an early owner/user and supporter of the Emberlit stove, I am going to have to pick one of the Tops stoves up to try.

And dangit they have a couple of other knives that interest me as well. Like the Rocky Mountain Spike. 1095 goodness in a compact minimalist design.

Thank you, glad you liked the review. I agree, I wish we could have the same types of forest classes in elementary school here that they have in Switzerland, it would do this country a world of good to go back in time in that aspect.

Cool, glad you enjoyed the post. Just remember that when the time comes man, and do it.

I have always enjoyed taking my daughters to the woods. I want them to have an understanding of the natural world, and respect it but not fear it. I have also always enjoyed teaching them various skills to further the cause of making them more self reliant. As I sat in the evenings with my father for the last couple of months he was alive things dawned on me. His words did teach me some things, but it was much more his actions and the activities we did together in my childhood that started me down the path I have followed through life. I like who I am, and where I am, so I am thankful for that. I also feel I owe it to my kids and to him to carry on that tradition.

The scandis are cool and all, but I am really digging the uncoated tumbled finish. I really wish they would do an uncoated tumble finish version of your Shango XL. That would be sweet.

If I lived close enough, I'd have to stop by occasionally. I do like this stove. It's heavy enough to give you confidence in it, but light enough to not be a pain to pack, and yeah, I need to pick up one of those Rocky Mountain Spikes! Looks like a great accessory tool to have along.

Thank you. Yeah, the time does fly by. It's hard to believe my oldest is grown and now has a baby of her own to raise. I'm glad I got a second chance at this. I don't do so well in the diaper changing and trying to guess what's wrong dept., but once they are mobile and can speak I'm to to go with grabbing them and heading to the woods :) It doesn't happen near as often as it once did, but my oldest still calls and asks when we are going to go hiking and for coffee afterwards...though more often that not she does fruit smoothies these days, luckily my corruption was short lived :)

By the title of your thread, I was afraid that you were going to say that tops was secretly making knives in China or something... LOL
I can see the National Inquirer ad now... "tops knives exposed"

I have a Tops MSK that I stripped (except under the handles), and I carry it every day now as my pocket knife.

I hated the original coating, and i was trying to sharpen the knife as a scandi for days... I got nowhere of course. That is when I realized that there is nothing scandi about the mini scandi knife...

That travesty lead me to leaving ugly marks from desperate sharpening attempts. I threw the knife in the drawer and said to Heck with it. But then I realized I had to sharpen it like a normal knife, which I did, then i sanded the blade, stripped the finish, patinad the knife, and i now have a trusty edc :-)

Yeah, I suppose I did employ a little sensationalism on that one, I have noticed that in general a scandal, or implication of one, will get noticed by more people :)

I know right? I's definitely not a "true" scandi. I think waht may have happened is they heard one too many times that their saber grind wasn't much higher than a scandi and decided to give it a go as a hybrid scandi. I have seen a few with the secondary bevel completely worked out of them, but heard it was work to do it. I'm just glad to see them exploring more of the knife market than just the military and survival aspect of it. I saw the potential for that to happen some years back when they released the uncoated, full flat grind, BTK in 1/8. I started asking to see more from them along those lines back then and I am glad they are doing it. I have always loved their fit and finish and heat treat, so I love having that same craftsmanship in more outdoors and sportsman type designs from them.

Found the stove on TOPS site but no listing for the fuel!!?? Where did ya score it?? This stove got me all heated up!!! LOL!!! Thanks.. John

It comes with one, but more can be ordered but I would think more could be ordered

I like the direction tops is going, thats for sure.
My first tops was a dart made of s30v that I deployed with. I wish I had that more than anything. When I moved from Germany one of the shippers decided that he needed it more than I did... along with a gg&g axe made of s30v that was given to me as a graduation present by my father :/
My second tops was a scorpion. I liked it, but it fit loosely in its kydex sheath, and the fragile tip broke... somehow. I never used the knife, so Idk how that happened. Oh yeah, that was stolen too by those shippers:/
I wasn't too happy with either knife. The dart came plane dull. Working edge my butt. Working edge = dull. The scorpions sheath was a lot down, as well as the tip.

The msk was my last try with tops. At first I wrote tops off in my frustration, but now that I have it figured out, I do really like it.

My only issue with it is that i think the grind should be even higher for such a small knife. But oh well, its as bullet proof a knife as I can put in my pocket :-)
