In most cases, simply adjusting your cutting technique can reduce the chances of failure. Using a mid-sized knife to do the work of an axe, or any other tool that requires more than just cutting, is what causes failures. I don't baton, I carry a light or middle-weight tomahawk for chopping and splitting.
 
I may have read this wrong, but it seems this article says any reduction in steel (such as a fuller, even with a round milling), holes in blades (and tangs) and even choils are stress risers.
Some of it is a trade off. It's an acceptable trade off though.

In the context of knives when talking about "corners" it's all about the tang, the choil. Places that when you load them up stress will rise.

Corners on the spine of the blade are not a stress risers because there is no measurable stress there from normal use. Even if you plan to spine whack the thing to death other areas will fail before the spine does.
