Tough as an Abrams Tank

I don't know but I'm thinking of buying it and reuniting it with it's brother.

I was amazed at the build quality of this knife. It's obviously stout, but it has the build quality of a very expensive or handmade knife. I've been impressed with some of the Italian builders and whichever one built this Hossum design did a great job.

It's been around a while now but I have no idea which knife hit the market first. Holding them in the hand, they aren't really that much alike IMO.

Do you recommend it and is it easy to sharpen?

Come on guys , really ?

A folder to cut yourself from a car , make a new exit hole as the OP put it.

Cutting thru steel with a folder ?

I have total confidence in my Emersons for most any task I can think of. Cutting one's self free from a car by sawing a hole in the roof ?

Aint gonna happen with any folder. With a large fixed blade you would be hard pressed to do so , if you dont believe me go to a junkyard and try it. ( I would love to see someone's everso vaunted M4 or s30V blade after that sort of abuse ) :D

I had to laugh at the suggestions to Spyderco and Benchmade ! Come on ! you are fooling yourself if you think those brands folders is going to hold together during that kind of abuse.

Now if you mean cutting yourself outta your seatbelt , breaking out your window and that sort , yea - no problemo.

Otherwise better bring a long a cutting torch with you.

I really did not mean to start a flame war between fixed and folders. i really have no fear of being trapped in a vehicles trunk. If i can re state my original query, it would be: what is the toughest knife that you could bet your life on in an extreme situation where regular cutting tasks may not be all that the knife is called to do.

I really did not plan on any folder "sawing" through a car roof, but was more looking for a knife that will be there for you when ever you need it most and be tough as nails.

cool, can anyone give me a tuffer folder than an Extrema Ratio MPC?

I view Crusader Forge folders as about the equal of an MPC but the edge goes to the MPC for versatility.

No production piece or custom I've ever seen so far would qualify.

Forget the price, to design a folder to qualify I'd say a milled one-piece handle ala Lionsteel SR-1, a thick saber (never understood tantos compared with good designed saber) ground blade of 3V with harpoon tip and a Ram lock of the Pocket Bushman. Probably impossible to obtain. :)

If production folders are what you are looking for I would suggest ZT or Emerson.
Hands down.

I would include Strider but do folks actually use those , or just place them upon a pile of paracord and a pistol for photo ops ? :p

Cutting thru steel with a folder ?

The sheet steel used in car doors, hoods and roofs is thin and not very hard, and plenty of folders are capable of cutting it. It's the pivot that will bear the most pressure.
The steel reinforcements (the cage) inside the car are a different matter. Literally cutting your way out of a car may be impossible because of these reinforcements, but the outside panels are hardly tougher than the tin cans your tomato soup comes in.

I think you need a fixed blade. Given your budget I'd recommend the ZT 0200, or the Ontario Retribution 1. http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=ON8782

It's a hog! Blade is 3/16th stock which is like a large fixed blade. The liners are 1/8th inch titanium, blade length is 4 5/8th inches which is pretty long. It's so thick that it doesn't look like what it is.

I second the Retribution line. I bought both sizes summer 09 and waved them. Since then they have been waiting in Reese Weiland's garage for Emerson style black G10 and L/R tip up holes with custom clips.

Personally, my Abrams folder is my Demko Navajah.

Not to hijack the thread, but one question on the smaller version of the Ontario Retribution folders (Retribution II):

Does anybody know the distance between the front and the rear drops of the handle? I like this folder, but I am not sure whether the space between the front and the rear drops is room enough for the fingers.

Maybe in foreign cars ? Earlier American cars-trucks , no way.

It's just impossible , how would you get into a good position ?... Especially in an emergency situation where fire or something came into play and time was of the essence.

And , the suggestions that CRKT's Aus8 will do the job ? hehehe :D Do not delude yourself folks. I'm not bashing CRKT or aus8 , however CRKT's Aus8 is butter soft , you aint cuttin no steel with that.

buying a knife with a seat belt cutter and a glass breaker is your best bet.
