Tough jacket?

I'm looking for a jacket that is something like an M65 military jacket, but made of heavy duty nylon and Gore-Tex or other waterproof/breathable stuff. I want the pockets and a tuck-away or removable hood. Anybody know of one like that or a good stout alternative? I've been surfing military surplus, Orvis, Cabela's, and all the hiking type sites.

Speaking of military jackets. Do vets object to people who were never in the service , wearing military gear?

www.mec.ca makes some rugged mountaineering jackets out of Goretex. Good prices for them in relation ot main-stream name brands, too.

Good link. I make a pilgrimage to the Vancouver store whenever I visit. It was more fun when the exchange rate was in my Yankee favor :)

Duluth Trading Co. sells jackets like that. They're intended for construction workers, contractors and such.

Carhartt Artic jacket. Tough as nails. I've had mine since 1989. Still going strong. Probably not exactly what you're looking for but i had to mention it. I've worn mine in all types of winter weather.

I have this one

It's several years old. I've worn it working with livestock, horseback riding and also when I worked on a drilling rig offshore. Very durable.

since you live in seattle and its relatively close,

i would suggest a taiga 3 layer gortex jacket.

heres a link to their website

made in canada btw, some of mec's stuff is vietnam or china i believe. not saying that they're bad or anything but i like to support local if i can.

i've had mine for about a year and its been through some tough stuff, from snow, to hail, to rain.

has held up great.

my father has had his for about 3 years and its just as good as mine. same amount of beatings since we hike together alot.

cheers

there is an outfit in Calgary called integral designs. They make stuff for mountain climbers and RCMP ,so it is tough stuff. They make yuppie colours and black tactical coloured stuff

I do not nor do others I know as long as you are not portraying yourself to be "ex" anything you are not, If you are, you are laughed at as a total tool. Also it is good to keep a neat appearance up, don't look like a bum. Last, stay fit.

I, too, am impressed with the Carhartt Extremes jacket (style J133). It is my warmest jacket and has gotten me through the last 3 or 4 midwest winters.

Link to Carhartt Extremes Active Jacket.

Check out "Filson" jackets. Filson is based in Seattle (IIRC) and might have a outlet store nearby aside from the web site..

haha.... i am a student and work in a maintenance shop on the side, out of the 10 or so guys all of us but one have a carharrt jacket....the one who doesn't always talks about his filson.....ironic you would bring that up but his is quite a nice jacket

check out tripple aught design. Kinda pricy but they have some nice coats and gear. I have one of their ranger hoodies and love it. Wish their titanium dog tags would come back in stock, but thats another story....

If you want ultimate durability oilskin is the only way to go.

Then you'll want to check out the British motorcycle rags, as they have all the ads for oilskin type jackets IME. Used to ride a 1940's Vellocette myself!

It makes me blend in more:D Just avoid the SF, Ranger, Airborne tab patches and you'll not have any issues. There are several kids my daughters age (13) that wear their parents (retired mil) old stuff, so it's pretty common in and around most military towns.

What kills me are the contractors in Iraq that wear ACU's...and have a beard:D All the conventional military brass and CSM's take a double look and you can see the steam shooting out their ears. God bless the contractors (they were essential for us), but they all look like a disheveled Grizzly Adams:D

Dale, are you looking for something a little more traditional or more high-tech? I grew up and started my military service around WA, and Gore-Tex is good, but not worth the price over time as it tends to eventually leak (even with wash/renew stuff)...that was the old Military ECWCS parka. I do like oiled cloth like Filson's and Barbour (from Orvis), but they can run pretty expensive. Another option is just pick up a good M65 field jacket from a surplus store (or one of the quality knock-offs) and spray it from time to time some of the recommend water shedding sprays. The UK-based Arktis makes some great parkas/smocks...http://www.arktisusa.com/MilitaryClothing/B210_B310/
