If you had to pick one SHTF knife that you’re absolutely sure won’t fail on you, what would it be? It can chip, roll, or take minor damage but it can’t suffer a catastrophic failure. I’m thinking along the lines of the BK2, ESEE 5, or maybe a Busse.

Gentlemen, choose your poison.

I reckon this would be plenty durable for my needs.

I have a boys axe and a 18" wrecking bar, you won't catch me constantly resharpening and diminishing the edge of my one and only belt knife till it no longer cuts well and I've gotta scrounge or barter for a reliable replacement.

If you just mean a sharpened pry bar, then the British Mod knife would work, or one that I may actually use would be be the Becker Companion or ESEE 4 or 5. Ax and knife edge combo, ideally. Right tool for job kind of thing. I answered a day or so ago about my dad was an engineer, so he would go with that. Unfortunately, I never really inherited his talent for using tools. I am sort of hit the trash can lid with a stick kind of guy to play like I was a drummer, does not get much better than that. :p We would use the Forsythia branches around our home as whips to demolish other bushes, etc.; as boys we were a little reckless. We eventually made our way to the local creeks in the area to try take our adventures.....and got poison ivy in the process. We were not easy on our equipment. :D

You asked for it:

Some of this examples are impossible to break with your bare hands, some are even impossible to break with a steel mallet. Don’t have the best edge retention, but you asked for knives that absolutely can’t fail on you, no matter what.

So, which one?

I’m sorry, this is not a knife, but a “small” hatchet made by @hellize out of a semi truck leaf spring and I was able to cut a steel reinforced concrete construction beam with it in two pieces (sorry, @hellize!:D) and the edge just needed a little sharpening. Seems pretty unbreakable/dependable to me?

Bill Siegle is still making very competitively priced Bowie’s and camp knives from 5160, that come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, handle very well, and can stand up to very hard use. Even better, he provides each with his own heavy duty kydex sheath.
