toughest folder

I like the Chinnok II which is extremely sharp with a tough steel type (cpms30v) and and an extremely strong back lock.

My choice in that price range would be the Benchmade 710. Or maybe an Al Mar SERE 2000, though some of those have had lock - up issues.

This is hard to answer without knowing what your meaning of 'toughest, workhorse etc".

I work as a firefighter, a fair number of guys carry a Delica. I would say half of the guys have broke the tips off them......

The often mentioned Manix ( I love mine btw) has a tip that would also fail in these guys hands .For that reason I would not recomend it if your use goes beyond and use ofther than cutting .

If your a hack, poke, pry, bore a hole type guy then I'd look at the Buck/Striders .

Or at something else than a folding knive.
If I want to plough my land, I dont use my car as a tracktor,
even if it was a Landrover or a Jeep.

Both the Manix and the Military have flat-ground blades and at least the Military has had some problems with broken tips and, since the Manix is essentialy a Military blade with a Chinook hilt, I would expect that it might have similar problems. I am somewhat surprised at the Delica breaking its tip, as it has a fairly strong spine almost up to the tip.

Fuller, these have been Delica 3's and earlier not the E 4's . Two that I have redone for the brothers have been the SS ones .Lock a fireman in a room with two bowling balls and one will end up broken and the other missing.

Its not uncommon to see guys using their knife to slide a door latch or try to turn a screw . Not saying thats the proper use but it is reality .

If one looks at Both Gerbers Rick Hinderer knife and Ricks own custom ones that he makes for FF you'll see a thick super beefy tip . But then Ricks also a FF ......

....since the Manix is essentialy a Military blade with a Chinook hilt,...
I have to disagree.
The Military's blade is more like a subtle clip-point while the Manix's is a more pronounced drop-point.

I must also disagree about the handle. I can't say that one would be stronger than the other, but the ergonomics on the two, in my opinion, are very different.

HD emersos are rumored to be available at that price range, and IMHO opinion kick the crap outa the other knives mentioned in the price range you want. But y not save up and buy a strider SnG/SmF no offence but its kinda the be all end all tough folder, except for maybe the sebbie, and hinderers

Some of us, perhaps a relative minority, feel the Manix can compete directly with knives at two or even three times its price (the Striders, in this instance).

Can you give me a link to one of those HD Emersons? I'd be definitely interested in buying one at under 200...most places I've checked, they're going for 250ish.

as i said rumored if you really wanna know check out the emerson forum at the usn they know where all the great deals are. ill see what i cna do for ya though AM. :)

my 2 cents for folder's under 200$

#1 overall : buck/strider 880t tanto for overall toughness. it may not slice the thinnest but it will work 100% of the time, lockup on original model liner lock was best (thicker, ive abused the living s#it out of mine for aproximately 3 years now, never a failure to report).

#1 sheeple friendly and very delicate, not needing to cut carpet that day, folder: Swamp Rat Rat Trap. Fit and finish well above what you'd expect in a knife for the price, unreasonably sharp(deadly!) and a great ergonomical grip.

If given the choice though, I would probably save up the extra cash and buy a strider AR, or Sng for the truest definition of a "Tough" folder.

For under $200, you can't go wrong with an Al Mar Sere 2000, or a Swamp Rat Rat Trap, I also love my Emerson Commander Karambit:D .

chinook, manix, Benchmade 630, greco folders would come within the $200 mark...

Lone Hunter and allenC, I do not own a Manix or a Military. I gave my Military away as I was not taken with it's flat ground blade, which is what it appears to share with the Manix and is why I have not really considered a Manix. As to the hilts on the Manix and the Chinook, the pictures make the Manix hilt look very much like the Chinooks that I have.

I think the manix would break with minimal prying. I like the knife, but feel it may be slightly overrated at times. I prefer the military in almost every way. The cqc-12 is great. I got a new one for $155.00 on ebay. It's probably worth twice that as far as toughness. I have broken the tip on it, but considering what I was doing, a lesser knife probably wouldn't still exist. The tip has been fixed and is even stonger now. Unfortunatly shorter, but significantly stonger. If you want to pry, a tanto can't be beat though. Especially ones with a lower degree angle to the tip. Super socfk might be the way to go at this price.

A knife that dosen't get mentioned enough and that would fit the bill nicely is the spyderco atr. Hardcore work knife there for about 100 bucks. Strong lock, strong tip, ect..

they are quite different. Try and hold a Manix.
