Toughest Folders

southern grind bad monkey--get one their website and check out some of the videos and how hard they tested them.

Cold Steel Rajah II. It may not be the strongest out there, but it'll be close and I really like it.

built tough!

ZT0550 and ZT0630 are good hard use folder
Even the 0350 can be a good option if a 3.25" blade is not too short
Large Sebenza / Inkosi is also very good and blade geometry can be better for some tasks

I have used them on wood and other hard natural materials and they did well

But honestly I don't see much interest in batoning With a folder... since the blade is often quite short I usually use them in a kind of "shoppers" movement

Demko AD-10+P Ti 3V w/ convex grind has to be in the discussion. Since you happen to be looking in the direction of tough yet affordable production folders, you may want to take a look at the Cold Steel 4-MAX. 4.5mm of 20CV backed up by the venerable Tri-Ad Lock.

What he said.

I was only half kidding...

That's gotta the be the most ridiculously cool Opinel I've ever seen! I never knew they made such a thing. I don't even know what I'd do with it, but I feel like I need to buy one now, haha.

Folding sword, instead of clipping your fingers when the lockup system fails, this damn thing will remove your entire hand. To each their own, but what's the point?

It seems hard to have that monster close on you since most hard use doesn't involve stabbing and even if it did the Opinel isn't the best blade shape for that.
I think the locking system is pretty darn robust but I admit that the pivot pin and wood handle might not be.

I'm kind of the opinion that using a folder to baton is destructive to it in some way so I'd rather a larger more capable blade area or a fixed blade.

Or an axe.

I'd think you could beat on most Cold Steel Tri-ad locks without much risk and not be out a huge amount if they do fail.
Well unless it sends you to the hospital

Honestly, it is not worth looking for a super tough folder that can withstand fixed blade tasks. Just get a decent quality fixed blade, and get a folder for folder tasks. I have folders that can baton, but it is immeasurably easier to just pack a medium sized fixed blade when you need to baton or whatever else. IMHO
For going out to the woods, I just have a good folder on me along with a good fixed blade of whatever size I feel like, and usually a Mora. All you need is a good folder and one fixed blade. There are plenty of each at all price points. $30 each all the way up to $600+ each. I have two 30 dollar knives, one fixed, one folder, that I would trust for any trip I take out to the woods.
Just do some looking around.

Cold Steel 4max, Cold Steel SR1 or Demko AD-10. All by a country mile. But, even tho they can take it easily, i still wouldn't use a folder for that kind of work, i just appreciate that the strength and utility is there in the design. It's one of the things that draw me to the knife, nice piece of mind.

I could not agree more.

Folders definitely have the advantage of being more easily and acceptably carried in more situations and locations. They are also easier to stow with one hand. That being said, the toughest folder - whichever it may be, must give way to a good fixed blade. When the going gets tough, a fixed blade is what I want.

Back onto the OP's point, my budget does not facilitate my commenting from experience on some the higher end folders referenced int his thread but I can say that I have been impressed with the BM Adamas and the CS Triad lock Voyagers.

I think the ZT 0200 is one tough blade, although I pamper mine anyway. Very solid build in my opinion.

If you had to choose one folder that was super tough you can baton with what would you choose? (not asking for reccomendations) my choice benchmade adamas
o_O For me , the whole point of a folder is in convenience of carry . So the ultimate " super tough you can baton " has never been my primary concern . This is what fixed blade bushcraft / survival knives are built for . Better yet , a nice camp ax and a saw and maybe a real pry bar:) . No folder is really suitable for this purpose . You can spend a ridiculous amount of money and lug around a folding pocket anchor if that's what you like . Bah humbug !

;) Ah... having ranted the above :poop: , I feel better now . The Cold Steel Triad lock folders are very strong and hard to beat for the money .Even some of the Ganzo knives are plenty tough and can survive some baton abuse , and are very cheap .
