Toughest folding knife, blade under 4" and $100 or less?

On that price point I'd say Ontario Rat-1...at their price, buy two! Cold Steel Recon...a lot of Cold Steel bashing but Recon and American Lawman and good, tough knives on a budget. Spyderco Manix is very tough.

Anything with the Axis lock (Benchmade) is going to be tough but not sure if any can be had for $100. I have the 275 Adamas (2 of them actually).

Shoot, a Buck 100 is going to be very tough! I wouldn't want to pry with it however.

While mentioning Cold Steel, if you're into lockers, it's not expensive and tough as nails : Cold Steel Bushman. Heavy for a trouser pocket but a very reliable tool.

if you can carry a balisong they are probably the strongest lock of any folding knife period. If you cant I would suggest a kershaw or benchmade in that price range. As for the hollow grind thing you do know that hollow grind refers to the actual blade and not the edge right? Most edges are flat ground unless your actually sharpening on curved surface which most companies dont do.

I wish I could carry a balisong; I love them. I am licensed to carry a gun everywhere throughout my state (open, concealed, whatever), but allowing me to carry a knife that takes 10 seconds for me to open is just TOO risky for the public servants who have been hired here to allow!

Benchmade Griptilian 551... 3.5" blade. Axis lock. Good steel (154CM). High flat grind. Fairly thick blade stock (3mm, 0.12"). Under $100...
I gotta agree with you there! Good suggestion. I already have two :) One is my go-to tough-use knife and one sits on the shelf, in reserve.

I suggest a Svord Peasant (wood handle, my choice) : ugly and too expensive for what it is, but eventually, with some work on it, one of the best EDCs I ever had. Very sharp, good edge holding, feather light, a little cumbersome in the pocket but no worries about abusing it. Use, abuse and re-abuse : easy to mend anyway and if you break it, you won't cry. Blade a little small for my taste but almost UK legal.
Another great one! I have some, one upon which I installed a pocket clip, so I can carry it easily without donning the belt sheath.

All the others are great suggestions too. Let's hear more of what else people like in this category.

Pocket bushman is a tough knife but the blade is over 4".

LMAO

i had look up that knife and you can get 12 toss one each month! lol!

or

get 2 dozen smith and weesons and throw one away each week, on feebay!
still lmao opy 8 that is funny

It's plenty tough and I bet most people wouldn't break one in daily use. The point is that people overestimate their needs. Try one and see if it breaks.

Thanks for posting that Griptillian torture test vid. Now I love my GP Knives M4 Griptillian that cost me $108 even more!!! In fact, I'm gonna put my normal edc, my BM 730 Ares, on the shelf and carry the M4 Grip today.

You're going to carry it because you saw a video where somebody beat one up and it did pretty okay? How about carry it because you like it? Don't depend on some stupid video on the internet to determine if you like something or not.

As for the OP, I like Benchmade and for your price point, the full-size grip would be great.

here.

Benchmade Griptilian 551... 3.5" blade. Axis lock. Good steel (154CM). High flat grind. Fairly thick blade stock (3mm, 0.12"). Under $100.

Here it is taking a beating in the Benchmade test lab (video made by Benchmade):

I have been putting some moderate abuse on a Byrd Cara Cara Rescue with the plain edge. Good for bushcraft and hard cutting. Lacking in the self defense realm but cheap and the 8CR13MoV steel sharpens quickly and is a 7 out of 10 on retention. My Girl is using the Robin with good results as well. Handle has good ergonomics and for $22 out the door on ebay, its a good option. I own 4 of the Byrd knives and will say they are not of Spyderco level quality, but they are better than anything else I have owned under $50 short of an Opinel or Svord

I wonder if the Mini-grip could withstand that step-test. The full size grip doesn't have metal liners, and the plastic handles seem to be flexing and taking stress away from the joint/lock. The minigrip has metal liners, so the joint/lock might take more of the strain.

Kabar Mule. I battoned with one for a month. Hammered the point and blade through granite (and easily restored the edge). Dug a hole through a 2x4. Hammered the blade through a 2x4. Of course, I never hammered it with the blade locked, but you get the picture. They're tough, reliable, take and hold a great edge, and they are inexpensive.
