It pretty much burned to the ground and Trace is having to start from scratch to rebuild and replace his machinery.

A prime example of bad thing happing to a good person. If you have knives on order, please keep this in mind. He is the type who will get back up and running, but this recovery is going to take a while.

Wow, that's horrible. I love his work and wish him a speedy recovery. Could we, I don't know, take up a collection or something to help him?

Thanks Phil,
I heard this from Kit and I would be there is going to be some type of effort to lend a hand. He basically is going to have to rebuild from nothing as far as a shop and equipment.

I will be glad to keep those interested informed and help organize the effort in this thread as long at it is OK with Darby and Randy.

Yep, always a horrible thing. At least, I assume no one was hurt.
Hope he has insurance, not that by any means it will completely solve the problem.

That is horrible. I hate hearing about bad things happening to good guys.
My business is barely making ends meet but if I can help in any small way I will.

Gus, sorry to hear this, let me know if I can help.

Would be good to know what started the fire, this info could help other makers.

Here is what I know so far via Kit.

No one was hurt.

Trace was out of town in Idaho and it appears that the fire was started by a lawnmower that sparked a fire in the brush outside and spread to the shop. His wife called him in Idaho from CA to give him the bad news.

I guess all we can learn is to clear a fire break around the shop.

His shop was in California. Do not know about insurance at this time, but I will keep updating and provide known and trusted contacts for those who are inclined and able to help a brother.

Thanks for letting us know Gus.

That's a tough blow, there are plenty of things that are easily replaceable but when you have time spent building something as personal as a working shop there will be lots of things that will take years to replace.

Having been robbed on Dec. 22 , I kinda know the feeling. If there is anything us makers can do to help out please let us know. Im guessing he lost alot of materials as well as tooling etc...

Traces shop was not insured unfortunately. Over on his forum , there are some pretty nice items being auctioned off.

I am sure once he is back in Cali and can access the damage we will have more details. I suspect what the fire didn't destroy the water probably did.

Trace is one of the VERY GOOD and any and all help via donations, prayers, good thoughts, etc., will be much appreciated.....as John stated, there was no insurance on his shop. :(

Unfortunately, it seems quite a few knifemaker's shops and equipment aren't insured which may surprise many. Considering the high cost and circumstances created by insuring businesses, inventory and equipment I can understand why some makers opt to roll the dice.

Thanks for the update John. I will look around the forums.

I'd like to help, if it's necessary and appropriate.

I've never met Mr. Rinaldi, but by all accounts he's a splendid person. I'd feel honored to lend a hand.

Has anyone heard from Trace?
I hope he can fully recover from this.

If anyone is co-ordinating a fund for him, let me know and I will donate a knife for the cause.

As of today he is still in Idaho , he hasnt been back to Calif yet to see the loss first hand yet. He is doing work on the new shop building , which unfortunately he was waiting a couple more months before moving all the machinery up there. :(

He has his spirits up , and they are doing some fund raising for him on his forum. Out of respect for the " no cross forum posting " I will not post a link .
