Trackrock Hammer-in Spring 2015

Blaine - got your pm, glad you will be able to make it. RLo's got you covered. Got you on the lunch list.
Get there early enough and you can unload the anvils for us.......

Bringing it current and a reminder that the last chance to RSVP the BBQ lunch is middle of this week - Wednesday, for you guys east of Atlanta.
There will probably be a bit extra but it will be first come first come at the back of the line.

See you guys there.

Carl Rx.

Now I'm getting excited about this. I'm trying to figure out a way to come up thursday evening and do my Friday work from there.

You ought to Andy. A few of us are gonna do a little meat burning Thursday evening, not sure which cabin yet, but you know how to find us.

I'd need to sleep on your couch for the first night.

Rob at Beaumont is booked and looks like he won't be able to get a grinder to me in time. I was hoping to do all my normal Friday work there. I was also hoping to grind the knives the kids make on Saturday for them and maybe even bring some 1/8" canvas to glue on there so they go home with much more finished knives.

That's a shame. Would have been really great if you could have had Rob hand deliver one to TR. He's been to one or two of the real early events. Great guy and sharp as a tack. Might check with RLo, he's supposed to pick up a used KMG and buffer in Blue Ridge/Morganton maybe on Thursday before things get started.

I am planning to pick to pick up a used KMG on Thursday and bring it back to TR. If that all gets done, you could have it available. Carl and I checked it out last month and it seemed in good shape, would just need the belts you use.

That could do the trick. I sent another message to Rob to see if he can bump me to the front for this grinder. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

What are the chances of someone helping me heat treat two 10" 1080 blades while there next weekend? They will not fit in my little propane forge and I hate to pay and send them off to get heat treated.

10" blades or 10" overall length?
Will depend on if someone brings a large enough HT oven for the tempering cycle. I will not be bringing mine.

10" blade. Somewhere around 15" overall.

I was thinking more of some sort of larger forge that would get the whole blade to above non magnetic and I would dip it in my ammo can of canola. Didn't figure I would need anything fancy for 1080. Am I over simplifying it?

Unless you can get at least one tempering cycle of about 350deg. you run the risk of having the steel crack after the quench. Bring it and maybe we can figure a way to get that cycle run. Worst case, you just carried a bit more weight over the hill.

Yeah, kinda.
Problem is not bringing to temp for quenching, but drawing the temper soon after. If you are camping in a camper with an oven then you can get that first temper done on site or if someone else has one and doesn't mind. Cooking ovens do a lot of fluctuating so they are not the best choice, but can de-shock the steel enough to get you home ok and find a proper oven to tune things up a bit better. Bigger issue there will be the smoke/smell in the kitchen some ladies just don't understand.

Another detail - What's the volume on your ammo can? That size blade needs more than a gallon of oil for decent quench results. I plan to bring my travel tank (if I don't forget to load it). Plenty big and deep.

As RLo said, not that much additional travel weight.

I had planned on securing the blades in a piece of PVC for the trip home to temper in my toaster oven. Typing it out now it doesn't sound like such a good idea. The ammo can is a standard .50 cal size. Probably a little small.

I will definitely bring them and some others I have been working on so that y'all can destroy me ego....I mean critique my work so far! Lol

Don't let ego keep you from learning................'nuff of that going around these days.

Like RLo said we can probably work something out, slaying dragons is half the fun.

Getting Very Excited! I have 40 finish grinds to do then I'm on my way!
