Kill zone.

Note the fur near the tree branch.

The squirrel tracks come down the slope and abruptly end where the drag marks lead down to the kill zone begin.

The lack of other tracks tell me the tale of a bird of pray in action.

The squirrel came down from the upper left and gets dragged off to the lower right.

What are you having for lunch?

Ooph! Someone had a rough night/morning... Kind of creepy actually (with the lack of tracks), I'd say you're right on the bird.

That can't be a squirrel kill. PETA says that all forest animals frolic while holding hands and singing cartoon songs. Only humans are capable of such evil.

I knew I should have given more thought before trying out my new bushcraft hang glider...now my secret is out...squirrels be warned. it also might have been that thing from tremors that attacks fro below..... Seriously though bird of prey is a safe bet...the redtail hawks are out in force in the north east this time of year.

Reminds me of a time while I was in college. We were all sitting around some outdoor tables and a bird started dropping bits and pieces of some prey it was having for lunch. All the envirofreaks vegans were appalled and sickened.

I love vegetarians..... I eat them all the time.... except for that cougar steak I had in W. Virginia.

:p You sir, just made my day! I just got finished having a debate with a PETA member in another forum, and this just added to the laughter.

@ Big Mike: I agree, gotta be a bird. Kinda makes me hungry for squirrel..... :D

Those are some interesting tracks. I come across kills quite frequently in some of the places I hike.

Found some very interesting squirrel tracks recently, though. Unfortunately I neglected to take pictures of them. There were some places where squirrels had been sliding down snowy hills on their bellies. Pretty comical, wish I would have seen one do it!

I once saw mouse tracks but they disappeared . How ? On closer look where they disappeared there were marks where the tips of wings just brushed the snow.Owl got his lunch !!

Great shots Mike.

Are you sure that wasn't Aiko that got that squirrell......

Thats a mental picture I could have done without my good man:D...but I must admit..once..while in a rundown country bar in mid Texas..after I had twisted off to many beer bottle caps...I to, ate the couger steak! That was many moons ago. I had pushed it out of my memory until now....sorry guys, WAY off topic:barf::D

That would have puzzled me for a little while...the only one set of tracks part.

i can see it now, squirrel walkin thru the woods comes upon a chipmunk that swiped some acorns, pulls out the pump shotty and blows a hole in the chipmunk, resulting in what you see above . any good merc knows how to make it look like he was never there. i bet theres chipmunk limbs buried randomly around that spot.

o ill eat anything that bleeds.
