If someone has no feedback on BF, and only a few posts in the trade section, am I off base asking them to ship first?

Was working out a trade and made the request to have him ship first due to not being established on BF but he thinks its only fair to ship simultaneously . He said he had established feedback elsewhere but I told him I wanted to keep it here. I have had enough good deals on here for the dude to see Im not gonna take his knives and run so whats the big deal?

I am rather new to the Forum and have no feedback. I would not feel offended by the request but I would only accept shipping first if it was with a well-established forum member.

I think it is reasonable to ask to ship first. I wouldn't feel offended either. If I know someone, I will ship them the knife immediately. If I don't know them, I wait until I get my end, then I tell them that I received my end, and am shipping theirs. It works for me.

I don't see a problem with that. You have the right to ask and the other party has the right to refuse if he/she wishes.

After taking a look at your trading record I would not have a problem shipping first to you but I am just curious if you and I were in a trade and I asked you to ship at the same time would you? If a person has been here a good while (like me) and has no negative feedback of any kind or any trading feedback at all for that matter (like me) I would hope you at least would take that into consideration.

I am more a buyer than a trader even though I have done some horsetrading over the years with some established members, some of whom are still around and others no longer with us. Feedback was not as big a deal back in the days those trades were completed.

I've never asked someone to ship first, and I always try to get my knives out as soon as I can.

I've never been jerked around on a trade either. If that's happened to you, I can see how you'd be cautious.

As a new member, I wouldn't be surprised if I was asked to ship first as long as it was presented with the air of friendship rather then distrust and suspicion.

i think its reasonable to ask a very new member to ship first.

i have not done this, i guess ill be trusting until i get screwed then perhaps change some of my exchange habits.

i have asked for a money order over paypal from a very new member, but otherwise dont change the way i do business.

because they can open a dispute and i lose the $$ and the knife.

hasn't happened to me, thankfully.

for example, i have sold a few knives to members where their first post was in my sale thread. without a foundation here, i have no idea who they are.

Paypal will accept insurance and DC#'s as the fact that you did ship it.

its just much easier to request the mo than risk a potential fight over a paypal transaction.

only done it a couple times, but i felt more secure about the deal overall.

If someone's brand new with very few posts, I don't see a problem. I'll admit I'm a Gold member, so if someone has been a member for awhile, but has no i-trader feedback, it isn't a problem to do a search of them in the GBU section.

It hasn't been very often at all, but I have asked that a new member ship 1st. In fact, I've had new members & some not so new actually offer to ship 1st. I can only recall 1 time that I asked a new member (Less than 5 posts & no transactions) to ship 1st & he said he couldn't do that. No problem I said, good luck & I walked away (So to speak). I'm not sure he stayed on in BFs as I haven't noticed him doing any transactions since that time.

I think one has to weigh all the factors that one can, to make that decision. I've sent a knife to established members that I haven't dealt with prior, before receiving their $. Thankfully, that hasn't been a problem, yet.

thanks for all your input guys.

CL01, yes, I too have had several people with no feedback offer to ship first without me even asking. Easy going people are cool, I should take some lessons.

At any rate, the deal has gone stale due to my request. Oh well, just knives.

Take er easy everyone!

Now that I have some feedback I feel better about myself going into trades but when I had none I was comfortable with the noob ships first ,you have to pay your dues .I have had longtime forum members go ahead and ship the day we stuck the deal even when I asked they wait until they received the knife to ship. I have also had people back out when I ask for them to ship first ,I felt better about them backing out than having to worry.Once on a purchase I had a member ship the knife so quickly I didn`t even send the payment out yet and had the knife in hand!! Some great people around here!!!

i have done a few trades now on here, and knowing my "newbieness" i always offered to ship first in order to insure the trust of the other party.
