Traditional Bowie's.

The Browning competition chopper sure looks good to me.

This one is on my list...Scott Gossman gave it a good review if I remember Correctly. Gene

I think you do, that was a well done review. I already have a 119, good knife. The ontario's look nice, very nice. But yes the stainless might be a problem, what type of stainless?

Either way a Gossman knife might be the way to go, or the AK bowie that Pit Dog showed me.

There is something very nice about the traditional looking bowies, very slick and rustic looking.

Thanks for the help guys, you helped a lot.

how bout a $30-$50 buck 119?

it's a good knife, just don't try to baton with it. use it like a knife.

The 119 baton's wood fine. Just don't chop a brick with it! I'd add the USMC Kabar as another cheap alternative.

I think Bark River has several different Bowie styles. The SOCOM-7 Fighter has the best aesthetics for me.

Atlanta cutlery has several traditional bowies and some are huge! The steel is also traditional so heat treat with them shouldn't give problems and the maker has a u.s. military contract so quality overall should be good. I bought a sgian from them and didn't elect to pay the extra for sharpening since it was such a small blade...anyway the steel holds a great edge after it's sharpened and it will flex and spring back.I intend to add several of these to my bowie collection.... check them out. http://www.atlantacutlery.com/atlantacutlery/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=548

Anyone try one of those 10" Bowies that Cabela's has been selling recently? Sound like they may be a bit thin for some tastes, but are reasonable priced and US made, if that's a consideration.

My father also has the Western bowie, I think he bought it new in 1973 or '74.
I've always loved this knife, it's a very large knife. He is a real mountian man, always in the hills (hunting, herb hunting, fishing ) He has packed it for as long as I can remember & really uses this knife for everything !
I purchased him another Bowie last Christmas from SMKW. It's a Hen&Rooster
Large Bowie w/real stag scales, full tang, nickle bolster & rivits. Great fit & finish:thumbup: w/ nice leather sheath.
