Found a deal too good to pass up on this large sized Le Thiers from Fontenille Pataud. The seer said horn, but I could tell it was walnut.

If looking for a non-expensive Laguiole, beware of "Bougna" brand, these sell in quantity (and fairly expensive at $79) on the US bay. Made in Pakistan...

You don't need to see any better, it's clear. Apparently I was blind to the letter "l".

Another Laguiole from Jean-Paul Daire. The scales are ebony.

I have to class this as French.. It's by Paul-Emmanuel Arestan French Australian full time maker. Paul has his own semi custom line & has the blades & backsprings made in Thiers in 14C28N. Every so often he does upgraded 1 offs I'm really digging the sheepsfoot blade & the etching is cool.

The handle is in ivory ( an old and prohibited material here)

Thanks for that info JM. Ivory and stag are not common materials for laguioles, it must have been an interesting brand.

Of course pressed horn was the most frequent but ivory was probaly the second choice, for top ends like marriage gifts or for the bourgeoisie. When you'd buy a knife for the life, you better choose a sustanaible material and ivory was supplied in quantity by AEF.
