Purty knife, Christian!! Please show us more views; guiollochage? mouche? etc?
Nice gnarly Juniper!!

I was only able to snap a couple of pictures before it got too dark Charlie. Here's one of the mouche and guillochage.

Made in the workshop of Antoine Monteiro. Thank you Âchillepattada Âchillepattada and Jolipapa Jolipapa for helping me learn about Coutellerie du Barry, I wouldn't have found out about them otherwise. This knife is a more rustic build than my Laguiole from Fontenille-Pataud, but that's OK. It's probably more faithful to the original shepherds' knives than the Laguioles I drool over. Plus it will make it easier for me to put this knife to use.

Hello Charlie,

Spring is harvest time, isn't it 😂

Achille 1.jpg

1. Bergamasco from Codega ( a company of the town if Premana) with a olive wood handle if I remember. I showed their simple model and you asked if they make it with a "virole" like for the Opinel. Here it is, the locking system is strange but seems to be efficient.

2. The same without the locking system

3. You're right this Nontron is not produced any more 😂. I even can say that it's a one of a kind .
I bought this knife 30 years ago and modified the handle. The patina hid the modifications.

4. May be Jolipapa Jolipapa could be more precise about the identity of this knife ;)

5. This "navette" has been made by the Vieilles lames. Bernard called me saying that the other Bernard said that I could be interested because it's small, well made and not produced any more. Of course I thought Charlie could like it.

I really like your latest Lag, style with authenticity. The blade will patinated nicely in contrast to the lighter wood-which looks beautiful. Tasteful file-work and flybee not overdone but harmonious.

Great knife for use, carry and admiring I'd say.

Thanks, Will

To a person, upon answering my questions, knifemakers enjoy when their creations are used as intended!! It is the best tribute to their work!! Thanks for the extra views, and enjoy that knife!!!

kamagong kamagong : Don't rub salt in the wound, please! (scannerwise) 😺😺😺

Âchillepattada Âchillepattada : could not find the exact pattern in the '40 catalogue. Rousselon just gave numbers to the knives or the handle material. Looks like a multi-blade Langres with special bolster. (pictures from Le Couteau)

Thanks for this information surrounding these old knives, Professor JP!! 😲
Jolipapa Jolipapa , you are an Encyclopedia :)
But when I see all these catalogs you show us I'm almost sad about all these fantastic knives we can't find any more 😢

Â
Thank you for finding these old knives for me, J-M!!

I want to thank everyone who has posted in the threads about French cutlery. It has reinvigorated my interest in the hobby. I've gone back and forth as to my first purchase and though I love the Capuchadou from Fontenille-Pataud it is on the back burner. I've decided my first will be from Coutellerie du Barry. It's in my cart and I hope to order it shortly.Screenshot_20220423-131841_Chrome~2.jpg

I recognize you for what you are Doppelganger. Who are you and what have you done with my friend Will? He shudders at the thought of crypto-rust!

;)
Rest easy in your beds, no Doppelgänger walks abroad . I find a difference between patina and the state of being patinated as in completion, giving an overall even hue or colouration. Whereas patina may well include eras of blotching, ugly streaks and indeed a stage of red rust, crypto-rust or hear this, pitting the consequence of complacency. It's a long process, an Art.

My views as to the potential evil of brass remain resolute ;)

The Red-Rust tasks me; he heaps me, yet he is but a mask. 'Tis the thing behind the mask I chiefly hate; the malignant thing that has plagued knives since time began, the thing that maws and mutilates our collectors , not killing them outright but letting them live on with half a blade and half an awl. 🐋

After seeing the ’40 catalog above, I wonder how some firms survived the Nazi occupation for the next 4 years? I assume they just shut down since the occupiers did not want knIves in the hands of the people. Were any other firms used or forced to make knives during the occupation, sort of like the small arms manufacturees?
