Traditional French Fry day

Fred Z Fred Z I understand your disappointment with the way the wood looks on yours versus the way it looked on the website. I'm not sure how much it's the photography, but that is definitely a consideration.
I know. It's just I was looking forward to the swooping pattern shown online. There were two stabilized birch knives at one point, and they both had a golden hue to them. Mine is just so, so brown.

Variance in appearance is always a concern when it comes to natural materials. Isn't that a big part of the appeal?

I like the covers on your knife better than on the model.

Good day, all. Here's a pic of the Adrien Giovaninetti Lombard knife (in stabilized birch) I bought from Maison Berthier. There's no doubt it is a fine quality knife, and the metal work is superb, but I was really drawn to the patterns in the wood scales shown in the picture online.

I realize there's no guarantee that the knife one receives will be exactly like the one pictured, but this is the first Artisan knife I've purchased from Berthier which was not.
I also prefer the knife you have, Fred!!
Here is a darker one, Walnut I think! 🤔 One from AG's first public showing I think!!
Jolipapa Jolipapa , maybe you can remind me about your beautiful gift!!  Giovaninetti 1.jpgGiovaninetti 2.jpg

I think that your's is more interesting a pattern...the photos lighting makes all the difference too.

I actually like both of those versions, but it's always a bummer when you don't get the one pictured. Actually happened to me a few times with Artisan knives from them, and the opposite has happened with production knives as well. Never know what you're going to get with them, but they are fast with reasonable pricing.

One of my favorites again todayPXL_20220204_182121062.jpg

Thanks Charlie. It is rather diminutive by French standards at only 9 cm closed, but there is a lot of blade packed into that frame.

If you notice, the Sauveterre is designed with a kick. Perhaps I shouldn't admit this, but I appreciate that small detail as it allows me to enjoy the walk-and-talk of this knife.

Fred Z Fred Z Look at the bright side. First, like you said it's still a great knife. And, second you'll probably be more inclined to use if it's not so "pretty."

Edit: I'd be disappointed also. Time will tell.

It's my first experience with this species. Beautiful, but I now know what knifemakers are talking about when they say this wood is prone to checking.
Interesting.... I only have one amourette so far, a beautiful Aurillac I received in November, 2020 from Gérard Destannes, and I've noticed nothing unusual with the wood.

Beautiful wood! From what I've read about it, it's prone to checking and splinters easily while being worked, but once finished it's fine. The only thing I've noticed is that over time and exposure to uv light, it darkens and the pattern becomes more homogenized. Still love it, it's a beauty!

Time flies... I had to search 😗 this is African Rosewood. That was AG's first real "bulk" job! Now he is an established cutler.

Not a Lombard, but I wanted to share my newest knife, a Sauveterre. This one doesn't have the Vialis stamp, so I think that means it was made by Laguiole en Aubrac.

The name has changed but the knife is still made by the same person in the same place.

Just in time for French Friday, a wonderful package arrived from France!!
