Traditional Knife and Gun Picture Thread

It is really a family tradition at this point.
Here is an old Ruger security six that had a damaged barrel. My father made a new barrel and some brass and walnut hardware to convert it to a rifle. I am not sure that it is strictly “legal” but it sure is fun to shoot.
The knife is a Chuck Garlits “Happy Jack” folder. My dad’s name was Jack so I had been giving him these knives as presents for several years before he passed, and that was his favorite.

If I ever wear out the barrel of Grandad’s old Security Six I now know what to do with it!! Very cool and looks like it’d be fun to shoot.

It is a blast to shoot. The extremely heavy barrel reduces felt recoil to absolutely zero. However, I do wear both a long sleeve shirt and a traditional archery arm guard on my left forearm when I shoot that gun, because there is some blow through from expanding gas in the cylinder to barrel gap, which is very uncomfortable to bare skin.

I don't have a picture of them together. :(

Rough Ryder "Zombie Nick" large sleeveboard Sunfish/Toenail.
Traditions (percussion) .50 caliber muzzleloading"Trapper Pistol" ("normal" range/target shooting load:50 grains FFg SWISS powder behind a patched .490 pure lead round ball. "Normal" Hunting Load: (tree'd Mountain Lion/Puma/Cougar*) 80 grains FFg SWISS powder behind a patched .490 pure lead round ball.
(*Tree'd Mountain Lion/Puma/Cougar is the only big game critter legal to hunt with an minimum .45 caliber muzzleloading pistol in this state. :( )

(at least until the after SHTF days...)

The photo of my (factory) big bore .54 caliber (percussion) Thompson Center "Hawken" ML rifle is missing from this device, or I'd show it.

A muzzleloading pistol is more "traditional" than a compact 1911, correct?
For that matter, is a compact 1911 (3 inch barrel) considered an "traditional" pistol or gun?

I really screwed up a few years back and passed on a 24 in .22 Mag/20 gauge. The perfect combination in my opinion. It was mint and extremely reasonable:(:(
That's the combo mine is although it's nowhere near mint. Even with open sights it'll dust woodchucks out to 100 yards and pats in the thick woods. It would make a great turkey gun except our local game laws prohibit rim fire cartridge use during turkey season.
Hopefully another one will come around at the right time for you, my friend.

I need some help choosing which gear to use for an upcoming elk hunt out in Colorado in November. I have narrowed down my options to two heavy rifles, Two small caliber backup and traveling pistols, and several sets of knives. I cannot take them all so I thought maybe you guys could weigh in and help me decide.

First up is a heavy rifle. I will choose between this Ruger #1 in 30-06 and this Browning BLR in 270. I do have a nice Leupold scope for the Ruger.

next up is the travel pistol. I want to choose between these two from NAA either the 22 mag sidewinder or the 32 ACP auto.

Here is a nice set of blades from knives of Alaska that I am going to give as a gift to a friend of mine that will be accompanying me on this hunt.

Now for the hard choices.

- Customs in maple, the folder is from TA Davison and the fixed blade was an old project of mine.
- Brown bone from GEC
- Case/Bose collaboration knives
- Green micarta from GEC and Lonewolf Knives
- Brown micarta from GEC and Smith and Sons
- A set in yellow bone from GEC
- stag from Amherst and a custom Skagel tribute

Take the No 1!! I have a few of them and there is a serious cool factor with them. My RSI is a 6.5x55, and has yet to be used on a hunt.

Zachary Zachary .30-06 - with the heaviest expanding bullets you can get. I'm not sure a .270 would be good for anything but a broadside on an Elk.
Truth to tell, I'd want something a little bigger than the .30-06 ... maybe a .348 or a .45-70 (with Garrett Cartridges 530 grain bullets.)

For the knives, leave those without a belly, and the hawkbill home. No good at all, at all, for peeling the Elk you get.

I would definitely go for the 30-06, with a 180 gr premium bullet. If you are hunting cow elk, the 270 would likely be enough, but I'd use the heavier 150gr bullet in a premium, like Barnes X or the good old Nosler partition. For the larger bulls, I'd want the 30-06 as a minimum.... my choice (if I ever get to go again) is the .35 Whelen... not a super long range caliber, but anything out to 250-300 yds would be fair game.

I had a nice weekend hunting grouse around my fathers moose camp. Still pretty hard to see in the bush, but I got a few birds and saw two bears - or more likely the same bear twice on different days. I had some cheap gear that hasn't let me down yet - a Baikal over under and an Opinel number 7.
