These would have been from the 60’s, back when cheap stuff was still pretty good.
Really the main difference is that he got a real tool set while I got a " jr helper " tool set which was not intended to be real tools.
My first real tool set a few years later had real tools, but yes they were cheap and low quality.

My neighbour gave me a pallet he was throwing away.

So I trimmed and fiddled with it till it fit my side gate and stopped my bins hitting it.

It also gives a place to hide parcels behind the bins as they do nowadays.

No technological marvel but boy are those pallets hard to take apart without trashing them.

In the end I glued a piece of wood at one end to get a perfect fit, thats why the plant pot is on top.

I love using my tools, like my original at least 35 years ago I got it made in England chisel which I had cleaned up.

The SAK is always with me I used the awl yet again to start screws in my no2 shed.

Isn't it amazing how patina makes it so much easer to pinch open a knifed.

I love tinkering in my bike shed/garage.
I refurbished this old axe I bought a few months ago and got a leather cover for it.
The handle was rough, but good quality/tough wood so I smoothed it down and oiled it rather than replacing it.
I removed all the rust on the head and secured it to the shaft, then sharpened.

Please don’t get the idea I have a clue what I am doing though,I learn it as I go along 😂

If your hatchet handle is at least Snug in the Head , soak the head and that part of the handle in a bucket of water . That will tighten it up better that the screws do .

Thanks that’s a good tip.
I hammered some slivers of wood in the top as wedges, and fitted a better screw.

Soaking the tongue of the handle in water will work at some extent but the wood will dry and shrink again and often a bit more than the previous time.
Better is to use a 50/50 mixt of linseed oil and turpentine. Soak the tongue for several days.
If it doesn't work well enough you have to whittle a new handle. A nice hobby by the way.

Dan.
