Ok folks, so last time it was asked that the poll be run a little earlier to allow for people to attain said winning knife before the month starts.

Let's get this show on the road!

POLL will run for 1 week, (7 days) get your votes in folks!

Generic Pen/Jack knife cover any variants or patterns that were not included, or you may vote in a category that best fits the knife you want to have selected. IE you have a swayback-tuxedo-pruner. Choose the one that best justifies this knife pattern.

WINNER IS THE SODBUSTER! ENJOY THE AUGUST TRADITIONAL OF THE MONTH FOLKS

Brets-ftw,

I appreciate your putting another poll together.

A thought for the future, however, would be to somehow limit the choices to maybe 5(?) patterns each time. In seeking to be comprehensive, polls with as many choices as these almost guarantee dilution of voting.

Maybe run anther poll-ette at the end of the week with the top x (3-5?) vote-getters, or include only the top x vote-getters plus two new options in September's poll, or...?

I voted for Jack, having realized a week ago that that's what I wanted to carry next month anyway. ;)

You know I previously brought up the idea of having a two poll selection process as there are far more then 20 patterns. However, the majority of people just wanted to vote in one. Also, if I were to make the assumption of the top X number, there would always be someone who gets uppity about their choice not being in there.
Yes this many options dilutes the votes a good bit, but I think we could get a definite winner from it. If not then we can get a top three group we could hold another poll and make it more final.
This being said, I'm open to more ideas on how to better hold this selection process.

For reference my original plan was to hold a poll choosing pen or jack, then putting up the selection of patterns that followed that criteria in a second poll, this would require a minimum of 2 weeks to allow everyone to vote and for people to have equal opportunity at both polls. Then people who are set on buying the new knife have to find, and purchase one. Which could add another week so, I suppose if you want to get the selection process done almost as soon as the new one starts we could follow through this way but this forum would be overrun with so many polls the mods would have a fit.

By breaking down to pen or jack BTW we'd cut the options to say 10-15 apiece.

Thanks for putting together the poll, Brets. It is an inexact science -but all in fun, so that's ok. What ever is selected will be a great excuse to pick up something new for August.

stayed consistent and voted: Sunfish/Elephant's Toe/Sleeveboard.

but I do have a GEC Big Jack waiting for it's first carry.

Is their a way to pair it down to 12 patterns/catagories that would cover everything? Maybe make december the everything else month, with christmas and all? Just an idea.

Jeff

As much as I would like to vote for generic pen, because I so thoroughly enjoy my Case 32087 CV, that always seems to be a wasted vote. So, I picked generic jack because I have so many good ones from which to choose. I could keep the spirit of the TOTM without being restricted to just one or two choices.

I don't own any(had the Case SS and CV ones, both sizes), but I chose sodbuster. Seemed appropriate for August. I just want to see all of the custom sodbusters out there...

yeah I chose sodbuster, mainly so I could have an excuse to buy that case carbon fiber one. :D

I chose the soddie because I need an excuse to carry it for a month anyway and for the excuse to pick up a CV Jr.

Thanks, I do think it needs to be slimmed down though, 20 options can be a tad overwhelming.

The more I think about it, I believe I can slim it down to 6-8, but those six categories will have a lot of variance in knife selection, which I find to be a double edged sword:

Pro's to multiple knife category:
1. If someone doesn't want to go and get a new knife, then they can try to find one that they already have and fits in the winning category.
2. Significantly cuts down on poll size. would make the process much easier.

Con's:
1. The connection of one particular knife pattern which IMO seems to bring it together, at least in my eyes.
2. The selection of one particular knife can force the participant to try a pattern he normally wouldn't or doesn't care for. I know that I didn't like the barlow at all before this last month's challenge.

I voted Sodbuster, because I've got my first one on the way right now (GEC Red Neck).

I agree with all this. I can just see folks getting tired of one or two polls every month. With that said, Ill keep voting even if I cant follow the rules lol
