Often, when I find an old knife that appears to have a story to tell, I find myself wondering about the other items it may have shared pocket space with over it's lifetime - such as these items recovered from the body of George Mallory in 1999 - 75 years after his death on Mt. Everest. The objects recovered, including a capable-looking Lambfoot knife, offer a rare look at what a British alpinist of the time may have considered to be indispensable personal equipment for a monumental undertaking.
Or this image showing the contents of the 16th US President Abraham Lincoln's pockets on the night of his assassination in 1865 - including his six-bladed, elephant ivory-covered Congress pattern pocket knife made by William Gilchrist.
While we may not be legendary mountaineers, persons influential in our respective countries' evolutions, or be able to go back in time to investigate the pockets of our ancestors - I thought it might be fun to create a record of what items traditional knife aficionados choose to stuff their pockets with today - indispensable personal equipment for a modern era, but with a decidedly traditional flair.
Personally, I don't mind a modern blade showing up now and then as long as it's not the focal point of the image or discussion - but,
I have been in contact with a gracious moderator, and if this thread is to be allowed to continue modern folders must be omitted - please reserve pics of modern and traditional knives together for the "Modern and Traditional Pairings" thread located HERE! Thank you!
A traditional knife is compulsory. Also, knowing that some members peruse this forum with their young ones, if you carry anything that wouldn't be appropriate for kids please omit it. Please use your best judgment in this matter.
I haven't been around long enough to know if this has been tried before, but I did do a search of the traditional subforum to make sure I wasn't creating a duplicate thread - all I found was a thread from 2007 specifically referencing pocket dumps during the fall season. Again, if this kind of topic is verboten, please fill me in so that I can edit the post. I love this community as it is and it is not my intention to step on any toes.
Here's mine for today, from left to right:
An RFID-blocking wallet (above) and a portable gaming console (below) - for when there's nothing to whittle and slingshotting would be frowned upon (like when waiting in line at the post office
). My recently acquired Natural Linen Micarta GEC #21 Bull Buster, followed by a GEC-produced Remington Granddaddy Barlow from 2022 (above) and a copper pocket flashlight (below), followed by a Milbro slingshot, and my keys. Not pictured is the smartphone I used to take this picture.
As Gollum once famously inquired "What's it gots in it's nasty little pocketses?" - come on, let's see 'em!
