Traditional Pocket Dumps

Often, when I find an old knife that appears to have a story to tell, I find myself wondering about the other items it may have shared pocket space with over it's lifetime - such as these items recovered from the body of George Mallory in 1999 - 75 years after his death on Mt. Everest. The objects recovered, including a capable-looking Lambfoot knife, offer a rare look at what a British alpinist of the time may have considered to be indispensable personal equipment for a monumental undertaking.

Or this image showing the contents of the 16th US President Abraham Lincoln's pockets on the night of his assassination in 1865 - including his six-bladed, elephant ivory-covered Congress pattern pocket knife made by William Gilchrist.

While we may not be legendary mountaineers, persons influential in our respective countries' evolutions, or be able to go back in time to investigate the pockets of our ancestors - I thought it might be fun to create a record of what items traditional knife aficionados choose to stuff their pockets with today - indispensable personal equipment for a modern era, but with a decidedly traditional flair.

Personally, I don't mind a modern blade showing up now and then as long as it's not the focal point of the image or discussion - but,

I have been in contact with a gracious moderator, and if this thread is to be allowed to continue modern folders must be omitted - please reserve pics of modern and traditional knives together for the "Modern and Traditional Pairings" thread located HERE! Thank you!

A traditional knife is compulsory. Also, knowing that some members peruse this forum with their young ones, if you carry anything that wouldn't be appropriate for kids please omit it. Please use your best judgment in this matter.

I haven't been around long enough to know if this has been tried before, but I did do a search of the traditional subforum to make sure I wasn't creating a duplicate thread - all I found was a thread from 2007 specifically referencing pocket dumps during the fall season. Again, if this kind of topic is verboten, please fill me in so that I can edit the post. I love this community as it is and it is not my intention to step on any toes.

Here's mine for today, from left to right:

An RFID-blocking wallet (above) and a portable gaming console (below) - for when there's nothing to whittle and slingshotting would be frowned upon (like when waiting in line at the post office 🤣). My recently acquired Natural Linen Micarta GEC #21 Bull Buster, followed by a GEC-produced Remington Granddaddy Barlow from 2022 (above) and a copper pocket flashlight (below), followed by a Milbro slingshot, and my keys. Not pictured is the smartphone I used to take this picture.

As Gollum once famously inquired "What's it gots in it's nasty little pocketses?" - come on, let's see 'em!

Fished it out of "the bay" but I had to search for "Milbro Catapult" rather than "slingshot."

Probably overpaid (think it was about $35 with shipping) but I really wanted one and, like you pointed out, not a lot of vendors to choose from.

On the upside, it's very flat, light in weight, and the perfect size for stuffing in my back pocket like Dennis the Menace!

Well, as I’m sitting here on the sofa watching football it’s pretty simple. A knife and a flashlight are always in my pockets around the house.

If I were leaving the house to go someplace and I wasn’t driving I’d add chapstick, contact lens eye drops, wallet and a house key.

At work it’s not much different. I have a vehicle supplied by work stuffed full of crap I may have a need for and sometimes use, plus a backpack with extra stuff that goes with me so my pockets don’t get much added. The Victorinox Classic has my office, PO box and house keys on it. The pocket slip holds a light and whatever knife I toss in it and then a key for the work ride.

I have reading glasses stashed everywhere so I generally don’t toss a pair in my pocket, but I may need to start rethinking that as I’m always looking for or borrowing a pair when I don’t have mine with me.

My needs are pretty basic. The flashlight is a recent addition, but has proved itself handy already:

Of course not shown is the ball and chain - sorry, I mean phone - we all tote around these days…
Love me an Okapi and a Toyota! 🤌

Not much cheaper here mate, and while it holds a lot of nostalgia, it's not much of a slingshot set-up sadly! :D

Very true! :D

Worth noting that every previous pocket dump thread has been quickly deleted

Thanks Jack! I figured you guys were picking them up much cheaper - country of origin, and all that! Good to know I'm still a (fairly) savvy catapult shopper!

Maybe this is the one!!! 🤞

I think mine was about £25 mate, with postage on top, which I think was at least a fiver  It's bulkier in the pocket, but for simple slingshot, I much prefer SimpleShot's 'Sparrow'
Maybe this is the one!!! 🤞
Good luck :D

My current pocket dump:
Wallet
Streamlight MicroStream USB flashlight
Fisher Bullet Space Pen
Victorinox Climber
Victorinox Executive
Schrade USA Old Timer 108OT
Rite in the Rain notebook
Handkerchief
Hamilton Khaki Field mechanical watchIMG_4264.jpeg

This is a great thread idea, by the way!
Thanks hsherzfeld hsherzfeld - I'd be proud to be found with that assortment of artifacts in my pocket!

Not directed at you, or any of the other posters so far, but just another reminder - NO MODERNS, PLEASE! Modern Knives are only welcome in the "Traditional and Modern Pairings" thread, found HERE!

I generally don't carry much stuff in my pockets if I can avoid it, and memorializing those contents in photos has always seemed unnecessary to me. Keys, comb, wallet, pen, glasses. At one time it also included pocket change. Knife-wise, there's a Victorinox Alox Cadet in the right front pocket and a Victorinox Alox Mini Champ on the key ring, which is a simple split ring.

I used to also carry some other slipjoint folder or another out of my collection, but I don't get out much any more and generally the Cadet is plenty.

I had to venture out to the grocery store this morning to secure more turkey for the pups - I often think they eat better than I do (as it should be 🤣)!

Upon my return, this is what fell out of my pockets:

In no particular order, a #21 Bull Buster in Natural Linen Micarta (get used to seeing this one!), a printed record of how expensive groceries have become (balled up and quickly discarded), a kilt pin (great for ensuring folks respect your personal space), a pair of small hemostats (endless uses) - my keys and wallet are in the waterproof rubber zippered pouch (it's raining in Miami - as usual 🌧️), and I took a weird little fidget thing I made from very clear Ultem plastic, ancient New Zealand Kauri wood, and a bit of leather lace!
