Traditionals in the Wild (Pic Heavy)

One of these two are with when I go out backpacking, which is a favorite past time of mine. I used to carry a folder, but I don't anymore. A fixed blade does it all, and one less thing to care about.

Pasi Hurttila hand forged damascus puukko(but I might add this Boker, the saw is super useful)

Awesome thread, loved reading through. We have a cabin in a National Forest and I find myself wandering often...

Great photos, as usual, Macchina! This particular one, and others by you in similar settings, are some of my favorites. My family has spent a week or two each summer for the past 26 years in Michigan's eastern Upper Peninsula, and as we drive up there, I75 just north of the Mackinac Bridge passes through this sort of desolate swamp/bog, and that's when I realize we're really "Up North" and our vacation is about to begin!

Here's a photo of a Colt canoe over the upper falls on the Tahquamenon River from when we were up there in August.

Great thread! I've often thought about starting something similar.
Early this year I started (hiking in general and)hiking the AT in GA with a goal of knocking it out by year's end. That isn't going to happen, but that's okay. I couldn't even complete a 7 mile flat trail when I first started hiking this year. My last hike was a solo two day ~20 mile trip through the mountains of north GA, so I'm pretty happy with my progress.
Early on I decided that my 77 barlow would be my "official" hiking knife. Others might come along, but that knife has been with me for every single mile I've walked.
One of my favorite photos of the knife atop Tray mountain on my first AT hike. (It was a doozy of a first hike)

Great shot, Erik, and I'm impressed with your improvement in your hiking ability/stamina! I hope you continue to enjoy hiking the AT throughout 2017!

I like the basic camp set-ups and photos of traditional knives in an outdoor setting.

Here's a shot of the Victorinox Huntsman I toted this summer when I took the wife and our 3 kids to Newfoundland, Canada. This pic was taken on the day we climbed Gros Morne mountain. We were taking a break at a picnic area about a couple hours up trail from the parking lot. Newfoundland is FANTASTIC. Amazing scenery and incredibly friendly people.

This was by far one of the most stunning views I've gotten the pleasure to experience, and my iPod photo just doesn't do it justice.
I've slowed down a bit due to the colder weather, so I look forward to living vicariously through y'alls photos!

SadSappySucker, Tray Mountain is a pretty steep hike in places, so that's an impressive first trip! That last pic looks like Preaching Rock.

MT Damascus, while I love solo backpacking, those are two great-looking hiking companions you've got there!

Thanks GT, and that's the plan!

Man, you ain't kidding! I learned that when a websight/ trail guide says that a trail is really difficult I should probably trust them! And, yes that last shot was from preacher's rock. I love the woody gap trailhead area. I started southbound from woody's gap, turned around and camped on the top of ramrock mountain(the picture of camp), then I headed north in the morning. It was definitely my nicest hike to date!
We should get a hiking trip planned one day. I know there's atleast one more GA hiker on here(Gafisher?).
We might need a pack mule for all the spare cutlery though!:p

I didn't see a thread like this, but if I missed it, mods feel free to merge this one.

Well, we have ”hunting with" and "fishing with" threads and I love to hunt and fish, but I spend just as much time, if not more, hiking and camping. Sometimes the only reason to go into the woods is to be in the woods and like any proper outdoorsman, I always carry a knife or four. I thought this could be a good place for porch dwellers to post pics of the traditional knives they carry while camping and hiking.

I just finished up our annual Christmas backpacking trip in the Uwharrie Mountains. We had clear skies and the lows were in the 20's, perfect camping weather. I was too busy enjoying time with friends/family to take a ton of pics but here are a few from what I have.

Merry Christmas my friends!

Merry Christmas !..

Probably around 10 or 12 years ago I took a 10 day solo winter backpacking trip through the North Georgia mountains and I set up the tripod for this photo on Preaching Rock.

I'm old and out of shape nowadays...might need a pack mule for me! 😀

"Traditionals in the Wild" means traditional knives in the wild. Other commentary about the wild belongs in the lounge thread.

I think the only one of knives in the wild that I have that is easily accessible is this one, taken on a family camping trip:

Great pictures so far, thanks everyone. I'm heading back out this Friday so I will hopefully have some more to add then.

I am going to LOVE this thread, I really enjoy the outdoors. Here are a few pics in the wild:

Picture taken on a cliff overlooking Rose Lake on the MN - Canada border, it was a very rugged and challenging hike to get to that spot. Buck 112 Ecolite

Same knife, this time overlooking Lake Superior from the top of Corundum Point in Split Rock State Park, MN.

Case Soddie Jr next to creek in Nerstrand State Park, MN.

GEC 99 also in Nerstrand State Park, MN

I think I have more pics somewhere, will post more as I find them.

Managed a little wandering today into the forest. But the rapid thaw/freeze has turned everywhere into a glass lake and even spiked boots are not much help. Progress was really slow. My two companions were GEC 73 liner lock in Osage and Bark River Escort in Red micarta.
