Traditionals & Trains

I can imagine the value this knife has to you but it was the watch that caught my eye. Hamilton 992B, a legend! You should know that on single railway lines, where trains traveled in both directions, where there was no signaling system, between stations that did not have telephones, many disasters occurred. The answer to the problem was, at the end of the 19th century, to measure and enforce travel times and therefore to provide railway workers with watches. This deserves a long development. Watch manufacturers had to improve their products and it is sometimes surprising to learn that the train has influenced the watch industry. This watch, the Hamilton 992B, designed in 1940, is the pinnacle of the "railway watch". It's of an accuracy comparable to modern quartz watches with an autonomy of 50 hours when fully wound. A historic and exceptional watch.

The Ladybird book The Story of Railways has this great artistic image of Stephensons Rocket...but I recently scored a full set of the Railway stories by Rev.W.Audrey ....which gave birth to Thomas....
20230316_163855.jpgthese were much treasured by the young Meako....the detailed immersive landscapes in particular impressed me....but I could never understand how such a small island with a tiny population could support such a huge and complex rail network.....probably for similar reasons that my kids had a massive battery powered Thomas the Tank engine layout which we could build all over the house...it was fun.
